A new cool object is introduced. A new wonderful Eglamore-smil panel. A new sardonic comment from Tom.
Perfect.

And, Annie, James has been at this for awhile. He's dealt with these...people...before. There's a...not even a story, just a glimpse...of a WW II soldier standing in a trench in New Mexico waiting to watch some kind of special weapons test at a place called Trinity. This silly scientist goofball hands him a tube of suntan lotion and a pair of welding goggles, tells the soldier to put them on. He accepts them, but starts to put them in his pockets -- it is, after all, pre-dawn; the sun's not even really up yet. Then he thinks -- "Always listen to someone who knows more about a thing than you do," and puts them on. He was glad he did. === I think James and Annie will both surprise each other.

Whaaaaaaaaaaaat? All that work getting into those fancy duds, and Eggers doesn't even get to show 'em off at the party? Shame.
Although I suppose it makes sense, because he wasn't invited and all...but still.

Continuing in the "What is Annie thinking" vein... 1. "Oh snap, sir!" (referring to the beacon, of course)2. "What happens if I just snap off a little at the end?" 3. "This pencil is missing its lead!" 4. "Whoever'd gnaw his pencil nearly through in the middle?" 5. "Two erasers? Where'd he get that, at the joke shop?" 6. "There's writing on it! It reads: "I SPANKED A DEMIGOD, AND ALL I GOT WAS THIS LOUSY PENCIL"."

Isn't Eglamore sooooooo cute? *.* I'm glad Annie doesn't brush him off this time.

Heh, I don't expect there to be trouble now, but at some point later, Annie will be very glad to find that she still has that beacon in her pocket.

I'm not worried about whether Annie will get into the kind of physical danger that would require that beacon. I think that the real danger she'd be facing in the Wood would be what Coyote will be telling her - probably the truth, but in a certain slanted way to mislead her. And I don't think that the beacon or Eglamore's fighting skills will be able to protect her from that.

Gunnerkrigg Court: The Adventure Game You receive magic item: Safety beacon! If broken, the Safety Beacon summons a dragon slayer to fight by your side.
So yeah. In other news...Eglamore can get ANYWHERE in the wood in 5 seconds, tops? That man is a speed demon. Or perhaps the project on the lake is an experimental teleporter.

"Always listen to someone who knows more about a thing than you do" Excellent advice. I hope Annie's wise enough to take it. Really, if she doesn't need the beacon she can just keep it in her pocket and everything will be fine. But if something bad DOES happen (and I do not doubt that bad things can happen in those woods), she's going to need help, and quick. Always wiser to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it, I say.

The beacon is probably also a homing device. Distance has no influence on the travel time. The Court probably has acquired some knowledge that can bend the laws of time/space. What are the odds that time travelling is possible in GC?

Has it occurred to anyone that Ysengrim might have an especial grudge against Annie? She's the one who fell off the bridge into what he considers Gillite territory. Whatever his timetable with the Tic Toc's destruction at Annie's landing area was, he's got to still be thinking she brought them, and that she's a danger to the Wood.
I wouldn't be surprised if Eggers gave her that beacon with Ysengrim and his short fuse in mind.

I would guess that single bound would be the way that he gets there. I'm really looking forward to seeing how this chapter turns out, because it has potential to create some very interesting relationship alterations between the Court and the wood. It could change in so many ways.
