Poor Kat! Oh the horror!
Looks like someone just really enjoyed designing robots, but didn't really have any clue about robotics at all. Either that or magic, yeah.

Magic-driven robots would be cool.
I see Rey's noticed the D symbol.

Rey looks great here. And i'll have to say Magic Driven too. Maybe even Shadow 2 could possess one of those or something. Heres a thought, did Robots "Original" body have any actual parts? Ann has no robotic history whatsoever yet she put together Robot. It would have to be more than a simple instruction manaul saying "piece A goes on Piece B" like some Model kit.

I dunno about magic-driven, maybe Gunnerkrigg's just had robots for an awful lot longer than Kat realises. These could be mechanical men with clockwork cogitators made by Kat's great great great great great grandmother for all we know.

Ouch, my guess would be either magic or they were proof of concept models.

what does she mean by drive system? the actuators that create limb movement? if those are missing how can she consider them mechanically sound? empty marionettes with all the proper joints?
maybe... mechanism for transmitting torque to the joints for motion? like a car?

As I'm not sure what she means by the lack of drive system I can't decide between the theories that they are powered by magic, that they are driven by external forces or that they work using a totally different system like "clockwork brains". IF they are functional.
I'm still hoping for my wild theory of them being exoskeletons for the glass-eyed people, but the fact they resemble some of the robot "servants" of the court is a little hard to explain without suggesting a lot of cooperation, change of purpose, or slavery.

My interpretation would be that the joints themselves are mechanically sound, but don't actually have actuators hooked up. All that's required to get them fully operational is the correct actuators connected to the joints.
So it's like a car, that is in perfect condition, except the engine has been removed. The gearbox is still there, the wheels are connected fine, just there's no engine.

Oh please oh please let the glass plates in their chests be where a blinker stone goes. Glowing fireheart robots!

Wow I think you're onto something there, lorem, I hadn't even noticed those glass plates.

Yeah hm... good thought about the glass chests. Also, panel 8: O THE TRAGEDY *hair toss* Also also: what's Rey sniffing at? And what's the D over the door, do you think? edit: I wish this thing wouldn't correct my HILARIOUSLY IRONIC (yeah right : misspellings for me. Just the unironic dumb ones.

Oh please oh please let the glass plates in their chests be where a blinker stone goes. Glowing fireheart robots! That..... is awesome. Best idea i thought was Steam Powered clockwork robots. Nowhere near as cool. and its an idea from Tom Strong anyways.

Oooe, doi they're magic/blinkerstone run. This whole shebang all about a union between science and the ethereal, right? That's why the school was put into the center of a ~*magical forest*~

I'm guessing her disappointment will be short-lived, soon to be replaced by a determination to figure out how they actually work.
THis could be Kat's first step in opening her mind to the supernatural.

Lots of stuff:
1. Drive System: My guess is like an operative system... some kind of control computer. 2. Maybe they were just for show, not work 3. Blinkerstone idea is cool, but it would also mean that the robot would do the will of the person who owns the blinkerstone, and woulnd't work in an independent way. 4. D = Donlan?? but wasn't this Anja's work unit, she wasn't a Donlan until she married right?
5. I'm with Annie on this one... I would also sit down an eat something... or ride my mice-bot like Shadow 2

"Drive system" has nothing to do with computers or anything, and more to do with engines. Similar to "drive train," except not in a straight line, I would have thought.
Kat's "There are no electrically driven components at all!" line has some interesting implications...

stm177 pointed out to me some possible further evidence that the Robots are magitech: S13's CPU was marked with the bismuth symbol. And as Jones explained, bismuth symbolizes the union of technology and etheric design.

not hard to believe, but wouldn't work in the same way that Robot does
