Here's hoping we get to see Kat and Annie's first meeting.

More likely we'll see the first time they actually saw each other for the first time.

Must be tough losing a good friend. I imagine James is somewhere abouts similarly grieving. Perhaps chopping firewood with a giant sword.
I must say I am enjoying these flashbacks. Adds depth to characters you would not usually think about. Thus far I thought Kat was the kind of person with not a care in the world. Seems like she is just like any other kid in school.

Oh no...sad Anja.
EDIT: On reflection, I should probably contribute to discussion...I wonder how Anja really felt about Antimony before or as soon as she showed up? We know that Anja was perfectly kind by her first appearance, but I wonder if she was apprehensive at first.

I got the opposite impression - that the girls had *not* yet met and that they knew each other from 'across the room' only, so to speak. Ah well, I guess we'll find out shortly.

Anja's eyes are definitely strange and somewhat zimmy-like here. Well *really* zimmy-like. She's crying black tears !
And I agree with Fhqwhgads : it seems to me that Annie only knew Kat's name because she listened carefully in class ; maybe Anja even asked the pupils to introduce themselves briefly during class, to make it easier for Annie. For all intents and purposes I think we can assume it was their first meeting...

I agree, I thought that was the first time they had talked to each other too. Annie wasn't even sure if her name was Katerina. It's easy for one girl (kat) to learn one girls new name, but Annie would have had trouble learning 20+ new peoples names, so I assumed that was how kat knew annies name, but annie was unsure of kats.

Does anyone else besides me feel concerned that Tom had to clarify at the bottom of the page that this was a flashback - as if he feared that many of the people reading the page wouldn't be able to figure it out for themselves? (Then again, some of the comments that I've seen on the comments page suggest that he would have reason to fear that.)
I also suspected at once that Anya was crying over the news about Surma's death.

(Then again, some of the comments that I've seen on the comments page suggest that he would have reason to fear that.) People (in general) jump to dumb conclusions and miss details that seem obvious to everyone else all the time. Some GC fans didn't notice that the first page of this chapter was a flashback. Some fans continued thinking that Jones was the third girl from that photo, after Tom put that theory to death in the below-comic comments. Some fans disbelieved Tom when he posted on the forum to confirm that it was James Eglamore in the last chapter. I thought the comment was both apropos and hilarious.

I'm impressed by the continuity - you will notice that Kat's hair is exactly the same as it was here: www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=17Rather than her hairstyle in the current storyline. Oh, and the rest of the comic was good too.

A lot of commentors didn't get most of the flashbacks to begin with, I wasn't that surprised by the comment. And it's true, Tom is always having to restate that someone is not the girl from the photo. I swear, that wild spec. thread is more trouble than it's worth, considering half of the people who post about it don't seem to see the difference between wild spec. and "gosh golly JONES IS THE GIRL FROM THE PICTURE IT'S TOTALLY TRUE TOM SAID SO"

...and once again the fact that Annie went to Court means to everyone that Surma died... unless it says something in the paper that the mother of the girl died... which I doubt...
1. This was soooo sad 2. I agree, Annie even says to Kat something like "Hello, you're Katherina, right"... so it was first encounter... but we haven't see how Kat reacted to having a friend, or how the Donlans also reacted
So sleepy, see ya all later

It's a little more than a clarification. The page is about a thing that happened in the past.

I think it's more of a joke than a real explanation. Like, i think swords are neat do you think swords are neat.

I also suspected at once that Anya was crying over the news about Surma's death. I sorta assumed more than that, though perhaps my mental timeline is screwed up. I thought Surma's death was farther in the past, and so the implication of this letter and Anja's reaction was that something had happened to Anthony, something that still hasn't been disclosed to the kids. I want that little square GC logo in an SVG, btw. I'd have to backronym it to something for an excuse to put it on my business cards or something, and once in a blue moon, someone would go "oh hey!".
