Hell no, I would have Reynardine plushes and Mort currency converters and Martin CD cleaning kits put out if I could do them and earn enough money to keep working on the comic. An artist "selling out" is usually only a problem for people who aren't the artist. I may not be the best writer, but I know enough to not change my story to suit merchandise. It should be the other way around. I find the concept of calling someone a "sell out" totally stupid, since it pretty much means artists shouldn't be allowed to make money from their craft.

Now, artists who start with the intent of being a sell out, that's where I have a problem. I find little value in anything made specifically to sell something.

Bear in mind, however, that "a story made to be sold" is totally different than "a story made to sell something".

That makes sense - obviously anyone who writes with the intention of publishing (as most people do) are writing stories made to be sold. When those Mort currency converters come out, I will totally buy one (which I will then use to count out enough money to buy a Reynardine plush...)

Which psychopomp took Annie's mother?

Did Annie beg said psychopomp to bend the rules when they came or when she learned her mother would be taken?

Annie and Kat get into a fist fight. No magic stones. No technology. Who would win?

If I asked you to do a full color version of my character

1. Would you?
2. How much would it cost?
3. Have I asked this before?
4. Was I supposed to ask elsewhere?

Sorry, I've a terrible memory, I seem to recall asking someone, I just don't remember if it was you.

What mystery of the story do we appear to be furthest from solving (compared to how close you'd have expected us to be to solving it by this point)?

Is that a crown over that person's head (in the "wait" strip), or is it the head of a fox?

1, Probably not right now.
2, A fair amount.
3, Not that I recall.
4, Not really, no. Maybe email me if I start doing custom drawings again.

Well nobody has anticipated what will be revealed Monday.

Neither. I might go back and redraw it to look more like a flame.

Oh man, that's just mean. Now I'm going to be bitterly disappointed if nothing is revealed on Monday. Bitterly, I say!

Are you enjoying drawing different perspectives?

Which part of the comic would you say gives you the most trouble on a page by page basis? (dialouge, panel layout, early sketches, final drafts, staying on task and not giving in to temptation to goof off on the internet)

Do you setup and draw pages two at a time to keep them in their book friendly format?

If you could hire someone to help with the comic, would you, and what would they wind up doing?

Why, yes, I am having trouble thinking up story related questions today, thank you for noticing!

I was just wondering about the bladed items everyone seems to be using. Besides the swords (glow in the dark and otherwise) Eglamore carries a pocket folder, Annie carries a folding pair of scissors.

On both those comics they were revealed you made a comment about the usefulness of carrying cutting tools.

I was just wondering if you actually do subscribe to that?

Tom-

1. How long did it take you to think of the full story for Gunnerkrigg Court?
2. How many iterations did the story go through through?
3. Could you tell us some of the first ideas that you had at first that you later scraped?
4. Are we going to be seeing more of the Administrator in the near future?

1, I suppose?
2, The early sketches and layout are the hard part.
3, No.
4, No, not without major changes to the production of the comic.

I think a blade is a useful tool.

1, I can't say, really.
2, The overall plot has stayed the same, it's just certain details that change.
3, The thing in chapter 10 where Annie and Kat have streaks of the other's hair colour in their hair? That was going to be permanent.
4, Most likely, yeah, but I don't know when exactly.

Knives are super useful tools. I received one from a friend and it's remarkable how often I've ended up using it.

Anyway. Just curious, Tom, why you update when you do.
It's always midnight exactly for me when the comic is updated- but you most definitely live in a hugely different time zone. what time is it there when you update the comic, and why then?

The comic has an automated update script. So I queue up the pages for the week or so and it updates the site for me automatically. Since the server is in the US it updates at midnight US time (though I'm not sure which US time it is specifically).

Do you like the show Lost, Tom?
