4 things: 1.)I hope Kat does build one. Androids are awesome. 2.)Also, this page definitely ratchets up the 'adorable' meter a couple hundred bars. Annie is just super expressive here. 3.)Yesterday's page quote is also today's first line. 4.)I hope Tom features that cursed teapot as a bonus page or something.

Hey hey, it seems one of those 'Questions to Tom' is being addressed!
Knowing the comic, it will be much weirder than that.

Cursed teapot...sounds amazing.
Also, I can't decide if Jones being a robot makes her better or worse. Certainly more awesome.
On reflection, she'd make for a rather poor diplomat to Gillitie if she was a super-technological-android lady.
EDITIES: Also, if Jo is a robot, I bet Anja made her.
This probably belongs in the Wild Spec thread, but:
Anja made Jo for James to help James get over Surma! ZOH MY GOD!

I'm trying to decide if Annie's being very tactful, or just reacting with amusement.

On reflection, she'd make for a rather poor diplomat to Gillitie if she was a super-technological-android lady. Which is why, in spite of her obvious talent as a mediator, she's training Gunnerkrigg's next Medium instead of serving as Medium herself. So if she really is an android, does Eglamore know?

On rereading some older pages, the "Anja built Jones" doesn't seem so farfetched. For example, Anja's stuttering when Kat says she wants to build a robot.
And I think S13 is about to get a very human looking body. Perhaps he'll look like David Duchovny.

Jones being a robot would be a possible reason why she rather be referred to with no honorific. It could be J.O.N.E.S.

If Jones does turn out to be a robot, she must not be associated with the Robot society from ch 12. Otherwise, entrance would be allowed based on knowing the password or something, and not based on whether or not one looks like a Robot.

Jones being a robot would make her relationship with Eglamore (whatever it is) kinda...weird.
Also, after reading today's page comment, I am slightly saddened that we may never know what transpired in Chapter 12A: Cursed Teapot Woes.

Thank you! That finally knocked free the half thought I've been trying to catch for-ev-er (Um. Be fair. For a couple of weeks.) www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=288Last panel -- that "coming from you" bit -- That might have been half honest concern, half jest at Jones' expense, might'nt it? Edit to add! Hahah, my coffee's just kicked in: Mebbe Jones was... oh goodness, built by Anja to replace the body of the girl in the picture! That would make her totally NOT the girl in the picture, but girl in the picture 2.0! And, uh, it didn't work out exactly, and the girl in the picture's soul is down by the river with a sword! Because she died in a horrible sword-sparring accident. Which is why Anja built Jones impervious to sword attacks! But Jones is seperated from her soul, so she wants Annie to go down to the forest and aaaaaa.....!!! ... Y'know what? Maybe it's time to put the coffee down...

[/i][/quote] You know, that's quite a good solution to the question why the girl who is "not Jones" looks like her. If it isn't something more prosaic, like a twin or a really similar sister.

I suppose what surprised me most about this page was Tom having his characters actually voicing the same suspicion that many of the readers have voiced. Did he plan on that all along, or did he get the idea from our speculations? (I hope he'd intended all along to have Annie think that Jones was a robot; simply reusing the ideas that we've suggested would be a sign of decline for the webcomic.)
If Jones is a robot, I don't think that she comes from that robot society in Chapter Twelve. The robots there were all portrayed as comical oddballs, often gullible (like the Doorbot) or inept (like the robot police); her absolute calmness, rationality, and absence of emotions is such a start contrast to their behavior that she must have had a different origin.

(I hope he'd intended all along to have Annie think that Jones was a robot; simply reusing the ideas that we've suggested would be a sign of decline for the webcomic.) Tom maintains a 3-month page buffer at all times. So today's page was completely drawn and ready to be added to the archives three months ago. Add to that however long it took Tom to write the script and turn that script into a finished page, and that's how long ago he had this specific dialogue planned. (And Tom did say in his Comixtalk interview that he had the next "three or four books" [ie through chapter 21 or 28, because he was still planning on publishing in 7-chapter increments at that point] outlined in his head. This was back in December 2006.) Considering that exactly 3 months ago, February 13, Jones was just making her reappearance, and the (to my knowledge) earliest speculation that she's a robot appeared Feb 22... I'm fairly certain Tom planned this in advance.

I paraphrase Tom, "Congratulations to all of you who figured this out. I'm literally imagining a dartboard covered with holes". (Not the exact quote, I know, but I would class re-reading that archives fun, yet a means to avoid revision). As for the strip - is that thing Annie's toying with the "MP3" player from last comic? As no-one else has mentioned it, and its been in two strips in a row, I find myself forced to try and imagine dark foreshadowing involving it. After all, it is my duty as a member of a webcomic forum. It could be... it might mean... You know what? Lets just leave it.

Heeey, lot's of stuff: 1. I think Annie might be joking with the whole robot thing... she has seen what Eggers can do, why think that Jones has to be a robot because of the things she do? She just might be teasing Kat, considering that they're in their way to build a robot. 2. 3 month buffer makes unlikely that Tom took the idea from us, and even if he did (for a small joke) I don't think that's cause for downfalls and stuff 3. I loooooove Annies expressions on this page, really 4. Kat's expressions make laugh soooo hard. 5. I second the motion that Robot might be going to get a more android body... let's see what happens EDIT: 6. Altough I think it shouldn't be a part of the GC books if Tom doesn't want to, I would still like to see the cursed teacup chapter

Wow! I really enjoyed this page. I love it when Antimony is being expressive and she is being so adorable here.
So Miss Jones is a cylon now huh?
Going back and re-reading the other pages strengthens the notion of her being an android for me though her deadpan character and speech would sometimes seem stereotypical of an android character. If it's always the ones you least suspect than surely it is never the ones you do, so it may very well be that she is in fact not an android. However making her an android in this case would then be a good surprise and plot twist and I enjoy plot twists.
I agree that if she is indeed an android she is probably not related to those in chapter 12. They don't seem to be anything alike.

FAN ARTWORK OF A JONESBOT! DO IT!
Seriously, someone should draw her terminator-style with flesh ripped off and metallic casings glinting in the eerie light of one of the court's hallways.
I would, but I suck at the artworks.

I'm curious, if Jones is an Android, and it was metal skin that allowed her to block Eggers' sword with her face, then why didn't it at least scratch her paint?
It's also interesting that Jones has a more "robotic" personality than any of the robots from ch 12 did.

If Jones is an android, I'd be willing to bet that Court technology was insufficient to have built her.

I don't know.. the court is a place where 12 year olds are building gravitational field generators. All of this is pretty debatable. Someone else had mentioned the bit about the Court has been trying to get their hands on the Tic-Toc birds and examine their inner-workings. Whether that's a hint at the Court's lack of advanced cybernetic technology, or simply a desire to bolster an already advanced base remains to be seen. Maybe Jones came from a "different" part of the massive Court (like Zimmy and such) where there are a bunch of android people or some assembly plant...
