Theory: 1) In the sense of access to a blinker stone's powers, the ownership is not transferred, new owner is included instead. 2) It was Jeanne's stone once. What fits in it:

Jeanne's ghost appeared to attack Annie after she used the Blinker Stone (even being able to cross the Annan Waters, which she shouldn't have been able to do).
The ghost began kidnapping people after Annie used the Blinker Stone to provide a campfire.
Maybe Blinker Stones, when used to create fire, serve as a way of attracting ghosts, especially hostile ones.

Somehow I don't think that was Jeanne that's kidnapping Paz in the last chapter; otherwise, why not just show her? I think it's either Jack or a ghost we haven't met yet (Young's ghost?).
On a similar note, how was Eglamore supposed to protect them from the ghost? He didn't have on his armor or sword, and he's not a medium so I don't know that he be reasoning with the ghost so much as fighting it. I bet it's a teacher orchestrated prank on the students, possibly as a test of teamwork or something.

Well... it's ether-sci device, thought amplifier and apparently rather powerful thing at that. For a ghost it's probably hard to overlook -- about the same as if the walls or trees were semi-transparent fog and someone there suddenly turned on a ten kilowatt mini-lighthouse. And since most of the time they has nothing to do...

My own Theories on the Jeanne incident, with the information we have now. Annie owns the stone. Anja, without having ownership of it, was able to use its power. Ownership does NOT preclude use by others. True, Anja asked before she used the stone. But that doesn't necessarily mean a stolen stone couldn't be used. It would just be incredibly hard for the Thief to make use of it for long without the owner retrieving it. Perhaps this Lens for Thought, as was said above me, served as a beacon to Jeanne, a being that is, in some sense of the word, Pure thought. The Stone itself is a means of making thought physical.Such a conduit would be rather attractive to an entity of thought with, quite probably, some unresolved interests in the physical world. Annie didn't really receive her blinker from Mort. It was Really from Muut and the Guides. They did that so that she could SOMEHOW interact with Jeanne... a case that confused them, even bothered them. A spirit that they couldn't collect. Moddey Dhoo Said, Specifically, "The world continues to spin, Pup. The boy and his family will ensure it." If we take this seriously, this means that The spirit guides' role is much more important than some form of afterlife. Spirits passing into the Aether literally keep things going. so when one doesn't, it's a matter of great concern. My theory: The guides were hoping the stone would lure Jeanne to Annie, so Annie would take the opportunity to help her cross over. A guide is unnecessary for someone crossing over. Surma proved that. If Annie couldn't find out where she belonged, she could, in theory, just guide Jeanne over herself. I think the guides were hoping for a nice, neat resolution to this little several centuries old problem.

You're the first to think that the psychopomps were simply hoping that Annie could do for Jeanne what she did for Surma. Maybe that is what they are still hoping.

I've tried to keep out of wild random speculations for a long time, exactly because of loose ends like this. I think what MD says goes much deeper than we know right now. There is a vital significance in the psychopomps' role, and I truly believe that it is this that will be a foundational plot point in the end of all things. Jeanne simply being there in the mysterious void that is "the other side of the Annan Waters" may more or less be like a singularity, threatening to funk up life as we know it.

Interesting little thought: blinker stones are traditionally given as a courtship ritual. Maybe Jeanne gave it to someone she was in love with, but that person betrayed her, and she thus attacked Annie purely on the basis of the fact she had it, thinking it was that person.
As a side note, I've long gotten the vibe that Young was romantically involved with Jeanne somehow. Deigo's hatred of him seems very intense for someone who simply failed to act, but appropriate if he was involved with her and let her die.

You mean a kind of love triangle echoing that of the Anthony - Surma - James one that has been hinted at? I thought that too.

Except in Anthony/Surma/James' case, the antisocial one ended up getting the girl while the dragon slayer ended up rejected and heartbroken.

I've had this idea in my head for a while about the blinker stones. There must be heaps of blinker stones in the world so this might not apply to all, but what if the stones were inhabited by spirits and other apparitions and ethereal creatures, who were slaves of sorts to the stones? It's pretty crazy but I couldn't really get it out of my head. This would also be an explanation towards "spying" with a blinker stone, like Annie (or someone else with a stone) becoming, in a way, possessed, seeing through the spirit's eyes. Apologies if this has been explained, I just thought it was a cool idea.

The page thread having turned to Greek mythology has given me an idea. We know that the goddess Athena punished Arachne by turning her into a spider. Perhaps she is involved in what's happening to Jack viz. etheric spider in his head. Basically I'm just grasping at straws about anything to do with spiders. It makes for some good Wild Spec.

Question: If Annie used the blinker stoner in Zimmy world could she,
a) help Jack with his spider problem b) possibly cure Zimmy, or minimize the "static" at the least

It's a compulsion, I think. Maybe it's brain worms. I don't know why I have to do these things. Heehee, the picture of Emoglamore makes me think of 9th grade English, when we branded Romeo "Romemo" so as to better reflect his personality. May I assume that Emo-Eglamore is an old joke? On to actually discussing what this thread is about. I doubt the stone could cure Jack by itself, but it would probably help. As for Zimmy, I'd like to think it might either help her or make it worse, depending on who's wielding the stone and for what purpose. [Edit] Welcome, therocksayz!

It came from this thread, starting with the second-to-last post, and after Casey's post on page two, I had one of those mental hiccups that makes these sorts of things happen.

Heyo, I'm not sure where to put this, so I'm asking it here.
What is the word on Zimmy's eyes? Are they - closed b/w gunk all over the lids and open when rained on? or - open, and black voids unless rained upon?
|
|
|
Post by Ulysses on Oct 20, 2009 16:53:28 GMT
Zimmy's 'eye-darkness' does seem to wash away with the rain, but if it was just gunk how would she see through it? I think it's just nothing, in the sense that before the universe existed there was nothing. A complete absence of anything. Plus it washes away with rain. That still doesn't explain how she can see through it, but still think absolute nothing>gunk.

|
|
Post by Seth Thresher on Oct 20, 2009 17:20:27 GMT
Well, I supposed closed with gunk would be similar to a Brock-o-vision, or I suppose Anja-o-vision in this case. I'm fine with however it goes, I'm just curious which way it does go. Personally I too had simply though it was absolutely nothing, but I just heard the simpler solution of "her eyes are closed", so it sense makes to give it some credence and ask if we already have that answer.

It seems to wash off fairly quickly so instead of eye-gunk maybe it's soot. Perhaps Zimmy's eyes are so powerful they burn right through to other dimensions and in the process incinerate dust particles and whatnot that comes into contact with them.
Maybe Zimmy's eyes are so powerful that they're open even when we can't see them for the soot; she can see right through the coating. Maybe part of the problem is that she can see right through her eyelids.

I don't know if someone's said this before, but maybe Reynardine's possession of Sivo wasn't forced. We don't know much about what actually happened, only that the end result was Sivo's possession. If Reynardine knew Surma before he went to Coyote for help, he might have known her friends as well, which would have included Sivo. Perhaps Sivo sacrificed himself so Reynardine wouldn't have to possess and kill any more people. That, coupled with the Surma-James-Anthony-Reynardine love triangle thing might also help explain why Eglamore doesn't trust/detests Reynardine. Well, that and the whole body-stealing-demon-who-kills-his-victims thing... such is the nature of speculating wildly.

Wild, totally random, not meant to be taken seriously speculation: Coyote is secretly british. I mean, the little doggies on this purse cover from the Sutton Hoo ship burial look suspiciously like everyone's favorite trickster...

Today is Sadie Hawkins Day, which provoked another wild thought:
What if Annie's class was having a Sadie Hawkins dance, attendance mandatory - meaning that Annie has to ask a boy out? That should be worth seeing.

At some point, the Court administration becomes concerned about the numerous robots that are abandoning their posts and other duties to make pilgrimages to Jeanne's shrine and decides to investigate. It discovers that all those robots are going there because a mysterious unregistered robot built out of spare parts is telling them about the shrine and urging them to go there, and proceeds to investigate him, as much because of the "unregistered" part as because he's disrupting the other robots' routines - which leads to the danger of Robot's true identity being discovered.
(Then again, maybe the faculty won't care; since most of the robots at the Court don't seem to be all that bright or competent, their absence from their usual tasks is probably not causing that much harm. They might even have been assigned those tasks more to keep them occupied and thinking that they're accomplishing something useful than because they actually needed to be done.)

The robots seem to administrate themselves, I don't think anyone would be in a position to note an abandoned post except robots.

Oh, gawd. So much to read through. If this has been mentioned already I apologize. My wild speculation: Annie is related to Jeanne! This page, it just reinforced that Jeanne's stoicism is really similar looking to Annie and her dad.

Oh, that's a nice find. I speculated on this as well, but from another angle (Surma's death and Annie having to help her cross over - maybe Jeanne was a medium too?). In my speculation, I connected Jeanne and Surma, not Anthony, though. However, the similarities might be a stylistic property of the art, a coincidence rather than a clue.

That reminds me of a random theory I had about Annie's parentage. Well two actually. since the key one is vaguely more plausible then the original post in this thread wanted I'll just say them and if any one wants me to I'll explained. so: 1. Surma was a fey who took the test to become human 2. Rey is Annie's uncle
