First Jones called her Antimony instead of Carver, now she's saying to leave off the "Miss". Hmm...
So Jones will be teaching this class. Excellent.

Being the insignificant detail-noticer that I am, I like how Annie's hair gets caught in the pullover(what is the correct term for it?) and she has to pull it free. Other than that, Jones seems to be a lot less formal than she looks. Any guesses as to whether we get her first name sometime this chapter, or is it just "Jones" for the forseeable future?

She didn't have a first initial on her office door ( see panel one); maybe Jones is her full name.

Just Jones then. Huh. If that is the case, it only seems to apply to the women so far. (Panel 6) Probably a coincidence...?

Fascinating!
I like Jones. She's rapidly climbing up my favorites list.

I certainly see why the headmaster was so trusting of her opinion, she doesn't seem to be the type to be distracted by fripperies. About as fun and lively as a dead fish, but a very perceptive and competent dead fish all the same.

I like Jones so far! She seems like someone who is serious but wouldn't make you uncomfortable with it. Can't wait to see what her Medium class is like. How exactly does one practice mediation?
Maybe Annie can bring Mort in for show and tell! Ha.

She introduced herself by her first name and was called by her first name. I see no reason why anyone should think that means she has no last name. Same for Jones' first name. Other than that, am I the only one fascinated by the fact that Annie looks five years older in that second to last panel?

Is she totally the new Eglamore or what? I bet at the next sign of danger (or possibly the next time Reynardine shows up and makes a lewd comment) she'll pull out a magical hammer from her sleeve.

hahaha, the new eglamore I liked that.
I don't think annie looks that old in pannel 5; maybe 2-3 years older than the rest of the comic... she looks nice in that pannel.
Yay!!! I knew Jones had to do somrthing about mediation...let's see what happens

Dang. Once again my reading comprehension skills utterly fail me. I misread Mezzaphor's post, leading to that little bit of confusion. That obviously wasn't he meant, and I took it as such for some bizarre reason. I is an idiot. As for the second to last panel, maybe a little older. Must be the way the hair pulls over her face. That's also probably the one of the few times we'll ever see her with 'shorter' hair outside of a carefully timed flashback.

Secretly, I still stick by my "Same first name and last name" symposium. Parley Parley still has a nice ring to it. Jones Jones..... not so much. If anything, Jones kinda reminds me of Agent Scully.

Ah, I see. That clears it up.
Anyway, Annie's hair is not the thing that makes her look older, it's the proportions - her hands are bigger and her neck and arms are longer than they usually are, and her head is a lot thinner.

I dunno. Her head has always sort of looked that thin to me from a front-on view. It usually looks wider side on or at an angle. (How we usually see her.)
There are usually slight inconsistencies in Tom's artwork from strip to strip, and occasionally from panel to panel (I would guess that this happens in most sequential artwork), so you may be picking up on that. It's hard to say.

Jones is rather.... short, isn't she? I was thinking the same thing, but then I checked here www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=269and she looks in pannel 1 of regular height, and in pannel 4 she seems to be only a little bit shorter than the headmaster

Jones describes the medium classes' subject matter as "mediation", which might tell us something. The one occasion that we've seen mediums officially at work for Gunnerkrigg was in Chapter Fourteen, when Parley and Smith were assigned the task of speaking to Ysengrin and Coyote during a diplomatic meeting. And in the last chapter, Annie's first adventure on the road to medium-hood was helping to resolve a dispute between Mallt and Moddey Dhoo.
Perhaps, in the Gunnerkrigg Universe, mediums are not New Age mystics presiding over seances but diplomats serving the world of mythical and paranormal beings (such as the Guides and Coyote), both its internal troubles (such as Mallt and Moddey's argument over who gets to be Martin's Guide) and its conflicts with the human world.
"Medium" and "mediation" both come from the Latin word "medius", meaning "middle"; as related words, it's appropriate that they'd be connected here.
Incidentally, I think that Annie only appears older in the next-to-last panel because: a) her hair's caught in her sweater and b) by Tom's own admission, his artwork can be inconsistent. Everywhere else, she seems the same age as usual. (I certainly don't think that a couple of years went by between the end of Chapter Sixteen and the beginning of Chapter Seventeen.)

Yes, I think at least part of it is that her face looks thinner because her hair, which is usually put behind her shoulders, is now partly covering her face as it's stuck in the sweater. You can see it goes over her eyes, at least.

(edzepp: are you groping for the word 'jumper'?)
Does "just Jones" mean "you and I are peers in an organisation where bare surnames are customary" [as in the military], or "I admit you to my intermediate circle of intimacy, and someday I may invite you to call me Susan"?
The latter doesn't happen in any subculture of which I've been a member, but I've heard of it.

You know, I actually was getting very strong "military" vibes from Jones from the very beginning. Not saying she actually is in some kind of military organisation, but her style and attitude would fit someone who has gone through a very intensive training, like you find it in elite military units.
