I suspect that this story will be mostly a flashback to Annie's childhood in Good Hope with the Guides, and that her conversation with Kat (including Ketrak's visit) is just the frame for it.

Considering the way the Guides seem to jump at every chance to visit Annie, guiding souls must be lonesome work.

in that case, hospitals must be like the Guide's get-together...creepy.
I still believe that Annie is mad at them for taking her mom away

Something just struck me about the timeline.
Tom said that Surma died about two weeks before the first chapter, and that Annie began attending Gunnerkrigg about a month after classes started. Considering that Kat still has her summer tan, the current chapter can't be more than two weeks after the start of classes.
So the first anniversary of Surma's death could be a few (in-comic) weeks or days away.
I'm sure that day will be a barrel of laughs when it rolls around.

Well, maybe this is it!! You know, Annie talking about the Guides an everything, maybe she'll drop the subject about which took her mom right at the time of Surma's anniversary.
...and I don't think it's going to be a barrel of laughs
