Anyone remember any red?

I'm going to spend this week somewhere with no internet connection, and be slowly driven mad by pondering who – or what – Red is.

When I saw the chapter's title page, I had one odd notion which I hope will not come true (even though it's a trivial matter); I put together the fact that Annie's hair is red and the picture of the scissors, and wondered if she'd go for a really short hair-cut this year. I'd rather that she didn't because I think that her current hair-style suits her a lot better, though it probably doesn't matter that much, anyway.

But it probably has to do with something else, though we don't know what as yet. Pity that we have to wait another two days to start finding out.

Probably the biggest question about the title (which has been touched on a couple of times) is, "Is the word 'Returns' being used here as a verb or as a noun?"

At first, I thought that it might be used as a verb, except that I don't know who "Red" might be. (Annie's a redhead, but since she stayed at Gunnerkrigg during the summer holidays, she's obviously not returning.) Then I thought that it might be used as a noun, as in "the returns of the students who left during the summer holidays", in which case "Red" would be used here as an adjective modifying "Returns", rather than as a subject. Though that then raises the question of why the returns are red. At least we'll find out, eventually.

I thought that this could definetly be Zimmy, those eyes always did creep me out... And remember, her eyes were only red for a short time and she acted... different. So, at a guess, amnybe she needs that cleansing again?

Hey, am I the only one who thinks Red might be someone we haven't seen before, who was away during Annie's first year for some reason? Perhaps even the Not-Jones woman in the photo? Her hair could be red for all we know.
