I wonder how the Chickacarney communicates with the doe. The doe seems to understand when he talks, but how does the Chickacarney understand what she wants to know? Does she 'say' something (maybe the "snuff" on panel five?), or is it some sort of telepathic communication? Can he sense what other forest creatures desire?
In any case, though the doe seems to be drawn as a regular animal, it appears to be much more intelligent. Intelligent enough to formulate questions about the coming of seasons, count days, and understand English at the very least.
