Poor Annie. :/ She's tried to be modest about it, but she's definitely been assuming that she'd become the medium for quite a long time - and mentally preparing for it.
That "furthermore" makes me nervous as well... maybe some discipline is in store for her irreverent treatment of the Court. Let's hope for "psyche!"

Cue an exercise of Andrew's special powers as the Court attempts to make an arse of itself.

Headmaster trollface edits incoming. Of course, as is the case with all Gunnerkrigg updates, it only makes me want to see the next page even more. Ah well. If Coyote really wants, he can probably just request for visits with Antimony anyways, but smitface would probably have to be present. Furthermore, these theatrics seem very uncourtly of you, Jonathan. What game are you playing? Edit: When the headmaster says: Who is he referring to beyond himself? Clearly nobody actually present at the meeting was debriefed or consulted, which does wonders for their image of supposed orderliness and competency. I guess it does serve to make him/them/their motives more shadowy and mysterious.

Annie's face! (To be honest, based on her behaviour this year, I'm not entirely surprised by the final decision. Of course the court wants a Medium that doesn't favour the Woods, if not outright favours the court, and Annie's bee wild and shown little respect for the court recently.) I'm curious how's she's going to be once the disappointment cools off. For the longest time, being good at all this Medium stuff has been Annie's only talent. She's at the right age where this could hit her self-esteem pretty hard for an awfully long time.

I have a feeling that Coyote isn't going to stand for it and neither will Jones.

I'm actually a little afraid now that the next order of business is expelling her. I hadn't even thought about that. Maybe just a public reprimand? But he could also be about to announce Parley's apprenticeship with Eggers. Edit: Also, BOOYAH, Jone's DID pick Annie. :3

Whew. Tom, you're too good at drawing human beings in varying states of emotional breakdown.
Hold it in Annie, stiff upper lip. They're all watching.
It seems clear that the headmaster does not have much of a sense of professionalism.

God I feel terrible for Annie right now. I can't help but feel that the "furthermore" bit is going to restrict Annie from going into the forest.

I'm predicting Wednesday page ends with "Nevertheless...". What was that movie where this guy was trying to retain custody of his daughter and at the end, the final judge kept going back and forth on points for and against him, separated by "however..." I remember really liking that movie but can't remember it for the life of me. In any case, I agree with the headmaster on this one, though maybe he should have told Jones. There must be an interesting reason that he didn't.

I reckon he's going to ban Annie from visiting the forest again, her visits there have caused nothing but trouble for the court, her last visit there put herself and Eglamore in extreme danger.
I think the court sees her as a troublemaker, whereas Andrew's power is the exact opposite, increasing order, decreasing chaos.
Also, if the headmaster is dismissing Jones' advice so openly, does this mark a schism in the court? Or at least, will it give us some more backstory on the mysterious headmaster?

God I feel terrible for Annie right now. I can't help but feel that the "furthermore" bit is going to restrict Annie from going into the forest. I agree. I wonder if Annie is going to rebel against it. Normally, this would be the natural reaction for a teenage girl, but then she is Annie... It's interesting to see her emotions come out more and more. She's come a long way from the impassive Annie at the beginning. First the cherry tree outburst, then the blinker stone from Mort, the fire spike revelation, and now this...

Remember, Jones is a neutral party observer and consultant - she has no real responsibility to The Court and as such, The Court doesn't have to take her advice. This open, candid discussion/disagreement marks either a lack of competence or a lack of giving a f***.

I'd imagine if they punish her (or publicly reprimand her), it's only going to backfire somehow, or she will rebel further.

That final panel is so ominous. I'm seeing something ranging from expulsion to imprisonment for Annie on the next page. The headmaster is a scary, scary man.

Everyone seems to be taken aback. I wonder if he'll be honest, or even forthcoming, with the reasons. Whatever Annie's father was doing in Chapter 38 is still an unknown. Perhaps, it was a court prerequisite for her becoming medium. A way of controlling her. Andrew is an obvious choice, as Parley already controls him. *rimshot*

I was gonna say that I don't see an expulsion happening, but then, Annie did cause some serious incidents that would be more than enough of a reason... Kicking her out so that she has to go and find a (semi-)permanent home in the forest would be an interesting turn. It certainly would shake things up quite a bit and the chapter is called "Changes" after all.
On the other hand, can they even kick her out? Last we heard, Anthony was still her legal guardian and he's out of reach. Even the Court won't just release a minor into the wild. Shipping her off to a random orphanage is not something that's going to happen in this story.
In the end, I think, Annie is just going to find out that not everything is about her. Smitty becomes Medium, George becomes Dragonslayer apprentice and Annie becomes nothing (for now). And that's that.
Incidentally, this could be a good thing. It would take her off the radar and give her more freedom to act on the whole Jeanne thing.

This isn't the happening. The happening is coming. Edit: I feel dirty, posting memes in this foruuuum... Mort's Fun Time comic was a trigger for latent shenanigans. At least, that's my theory.

The interesting thing here just the "twist" of Annie not being picked, or even the crass unprofessionalism of the affair, but the fact that as far as we can see the entire Court seems surprised by this.
There are a number of rational reasons one WOULDN'T pick Annie (impulsive, endangers herself and others, breaks/ignores rules, not only is not Court-Forest neutral or pro-Court, but arguably pro-Forest, plus, she keeps picking at the Events-Which-Must-Remain-Buried of the Court's past) -- but it looks like EVERYONE, not just Annie herself, was assuming she was going to be granted the position no matter what.
