Hello! This is my first post on the forums and I have been working on it for much longer than I should have instead of an essay due tomorrow! I have been a fan of Gunnerkrigg Court for quite a while and today noticed the forums. Below is a list of a few ideas I have been thinking about and decided to post a summary.
Jones-
I've been reading back through old chapters and I noticed this series of events-
www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=1076
Coyote declares Jones the "Wandering Eye" and tells Annie to question her about the "stars in the night sky". His comment reminded me of the time Annie first visited the forest and he told her the story of how he helped placed the stars in the sky-
www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=488
The "great spirit" is placing the stars in the sky. If you'll notice, the third panel shows a gigantic eye watching Coyote make a mess of the sky. When I saw that eye it hit me: What if Jones is that great spirit or was created specifically by that great spirit for a purpose?
According to human religions/mythologies, "God" is based off human worship of the Sun. The Sun in our solar system allows us to live, period. The Sun creates heat and light which organisms need to survive.
I'm a fan of mythology and after I noticed the giant eye in the third panel, I started to come to this conclusion. Ra is the Egyptian Sun God-
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ra
His symbol is an eye-

The "wandering eye" could be the sun as it "wanders" across the sky?
We also know that Jones is very dense thanks to this panel. One of the theories is that Jones is a fallen star-

In this panel you can observe how Eglamore's blade either strikes her face and glances off or barely cuts her. If it cuts her, it looks as if light is shining out-
www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=380
It can also be observed from the most recent panels that Jones has not aged. We do not see the Sun age but we know from science it is SLOWLY getting older. See the similarities?
Counter argument- Coyote references the "great spirit" as male and so is Ra. However, sexes in a story are up to the creator- meaning it may or may not be important.
In the most recent chapter, Coyote effectively tells Annie that the imagination and creativity of man brought "inhuman beings" into the world. Man believes something, dies believing that something then combined with the ether of the universe a "god" is created. Seeing the Sun as the "father" of mankind instigated religious ideas since the dawn of human thought. Continuing with the "God is the Sun" theory- if Jones is not the sun but a fallen star couldn't you say a fallen star may be a fallen angel? God=Sun, Star=Angel.
All just guesses of course. (I mean no disrespect to any religion! Please do not be offended.)
Connections with other characters-
Brinnie-
gunnerkrigg.wikia.com/wiki/Brinnie
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brynhildr
According to Norse mythology and Tom, she is a Valkyrie living on earth for going against the word of Odin. In the actual mythology she fought for a king whom Odin disagreed with. I'm including her based off of fan speculation as well as the "Valkyrie" mythology. Valkyries decided who lived and who died in battle then escorted them to the afterlife (sounds like a psychopomp, eh?) I really would like to see more of Brinnie but she isn't as mysterious as some of our other female characters.
Jeanne-
gunnerkrigg.wikia.com/wiki/Jeanne
She was a lady of the court who died of heartbreak only to become the ghost of the Annan Waters. Personally, I feel her story is unfinished but from what we have learned she loved a NAMELESS Anwyn from the Woods. The forest was split in two by Coyote and SOMEHOW the Court made the people of the woods unable to cross the Annan Waters. (I would LOVE to know more about how this was able to happen!!! I have many ideas which I would love to discuss.) As you can see on this page-
www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=772
and this page –
www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=775
It looks as if Coyote had not yet separated the Woods because Jeanne and her lover were able to simply walk up to one another. On the Annan Bridge there would be no way for him to sneak over undetected. I believe the strange ritual that was performed with their deaths caused the “etheric” separation and was covered up by the Court.
Based on this discombobulated series of thoughts I'm suggesting that-
1. Jones may be a personification of the Sun/God. Example- “Wandering Eye” and Sun worship mythology.
2. Jones may not actually exist but exists because man believes in the concept of a higher power living on the planet. Example- Coyote existing yet not being "real".
3. If Jones is not a personification of the Sun then she may be a fallen star/angel. Example- Her embarrassing density/inability to age OR SMILE.
4. Brinnie may be/become a psychopomp. Example- Valkyrie mythology.
5. Jeanne and the “ritual” in which she was killed had something to do with the splitting of the Woods. Her soul is trapped there but what about her lover’s?
6. The inability for the people of the Woods to cross the Waters is caused by the arrow. Example- Folklore that non-human beings cannot cross water.
These are just some of my ideas that I wanted to share. I would also like to expand on them when I have more time. Please post regarding anything I've mentioned or if you would like to argue, support, or discuss further. If I have posted incorrectly/broken any rules please let me know. Back to the neglected essay!
