Year 7 would make James and Donny, what? About 13 yrs old? Jones still looks the same, hairstyle not withstanding.

Yeah, even her hair length is exactly the same. Makes you wonder how far back we're going to go.

Jones is James' mother.
1. They look similar.
2. Look at the previous comic "I will always be here for you James" especially the last panel.
3. Pretty much every interaction between the two of them Jones has taken a maternal role of some kind.

*finally strikes one of the big questions about Jones off the list* Does not age: check!

Ewwwww! I know age is just a number, but the squick factor is too much. Oh, I don't know. If Jones looks, say, twenty-five, and James first met her when he was half her apparent age, that would only make her twelve or thirteen years his senior. Not totally out of bounds. So maybe he had a crush on his teacher, then she went away for several years. When they got together again, he was an adult, and she was willing to see him in a romantic light. I doubt that's what happened, but it's possible.

Wuh, okay, this is a revelation in that she does not appear to age.
She definetly keeps up with the current style, and in this strip, it seems to be the 1960's?
Still, she does seem slightly younger, in a way.

Wait, what year is the strip set in? Somewhere between the 1950s and 1970s.....

Wait.
Jones is short. Go back and check out her height compared to others in the strip. She's a couple inches over five foot tall, at most.
Now if James and Donny are about to go into Year 7, they are maybe 11-12. So if they haven't hit their growth spurts yet, they should be at most about a half-foot shorter than Jones (assuming Jones has grown shorter in the last 25 years). Instead Donny is only up to her waist, making him about 2 1/2 feet tall.
Even in a story full of magic, sentient robots, living shadows, ghosts, and animal gods, that seems a little hard to believe.
(And Jones is dressed in a much younger style here. It's possible that she's actually a Year 12 student.)

She's looking more like a fresh-faced teacher here, than the business-suited smooth operator we are used to ;D Not any younger though. That might be on a right trail. If it turns out JJ&J relationship is not romantic in nature, it would be quite a fine bit of misdirection on Tom's part. That, or we just have dirty minds

Due to age related awkwardness, I really hope so, but this one among others are more than a little ambiguous. Let's hope all will be made clear soon... Doubt it though.

Between this strip and the last, it seems to have gone back at least a decade, so, I dunno, first was modern era (early 2000's), then the early 90's, maybe the 80's, then we're in the 70's, now we're in the 60's.
If the trend is anything, the next comic will either be in the 1950s or 1940s.

If not, she's a relative, and if she really is James mom, James is one hell of a mommas boy, LAUGHING ON LINE.

I would guess 70s, and that James is about my age (42). If he looks younger, James may also not age.

If www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=1097is maternal, they're still weird. In any event, Eggers calls her "Jones" everytime (and once "Jo", during the training scene when we see them together the first time) which I can't really reconcile with Jones being a mother figure to Eglamore.
