I wouldn't say "controls", but he definitely swims in it.
Looks like we've got Coyote figured for once. Enjoy it while it lasts.

I wouldn't say "controls", but he definitely swims in it. He says he bends it to his will. Thus controls. He is a purely etherical being.

One more guess at what Coyote's saying, before we (hopefully) learn more: He doesn't exist in the physical world. Unlike Ysengrin or Renard or Annie etc, he's purely etheric. People just think they see him. When I saw this I thought "nah..." I am glad to have been proven wrong.

The funny thing is, the whole discussion of "Every dead human, and their dying thoughts and stories join the Ether" is very...Lifestream to me.
Would that make Coyote Sephiroth? Or Jenova?
...
Dammit, now I'll never get those pictures out of my head. CURSE YOU MY MIND!

I could practically hear that as something clicked in place as things are starting to come together in the minds of thousands of GC readers all over the world!

Oh, I think I get it now! I shall try to explain and hopefully, someone will refine the idea later, if not me.
When the man seeing the coyote died, the animal somehow became the receptacle of his mind, thus dragging it into the ether.
It might mean something creepy is going on with Coyote's interest in Annie's heritage/ancestry. Sense is very difficult to make for me, even if things have been partially explained, how does he not exist, if the ether is as essential to the world as water, and it is at his will...? WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
Having been studying religions for a while now, I had never found something as... twisted as this. A nonexistent god born through the dying thought of a man, in power of the force that makes the universe work? If I stop now, I shall not get dragged into thinking about this too much.

Holy hell. Like eightyfour said, you could almost hear the damn gears click into space and spin.
Gunnerkrigg Court continues to deliver pure gold.

Still not seeing how this demonstrates how Coyote "...does not exist".
"...is completely unhinged", yes, but not the other yet...

Judging by the bottom left corner, it would make Coyote Ouroboros. If I stop now, I shall not get dragged into thinking about this too much. Far too late, I'm sure.

So gods are made of dead humans' souls?
...and so I come once again to Coyote claiming Gunnerkrigg Court's goal is to become God. Puts things like the etheric power station in a really disturbing light, it does. If Coyote can be trusted, which he can't quite be, but still.

This means the bone lasers are powered by... humans souls! I knew it, Tony you monster! How could you do this?! (Is death really required? I thought it was just belief, but if Coyote somehow grows stronger every time a human's thoughts/soul/whatever are transferred to the ether, that means he's a creature of the ether entirely, just like the spiders.)

So gods are made of dead humans' souls? And vice-versa, of course. Exact distinctions may depend on whether humans generate their own etheric potential or allocate it from a pool/background field. ...and so I come once again to Coyote claiming Gunnerkrigg Court's goal is to become God. Puts things like the etheric power station in a really disturbing light, it does. If Coyote can be trusted, which he can't quite be, but still. It depends whether they know, and what the power station consumes. I mean, will using the power station intensively drain the angular momentum of the earth? Are they consuming something in human potential? On the other hand, I can easily see it as part of wider attempts to control and manipulate ether to take what appears to be all of human potential out of the hands of "those illiterate yahoos in the forest".

I have been reading this since Chapter 5, long before Annie had a normal-shaped head. This is the comic that finally made me get a forum account! Still not seeing how this demonstrates how Coyote "... does not exist". "...is completely unhinged", yes, but not the other yet... Coyote is a trickster. He likes bending the truth to his advantage and whim. I think he told Annie that he does not exist to try to rile her up, shock her, or somehow play with her. If you take his "I do not exist" completely literally, he has successfully tricked you. To reiterate what PB-Prime quoted from Indrid Cold from yesterday, Reynardine, Annie, and Ysengrin all have physical forms that were somehow gifted with the ability to tap into the ether. They exist in the physical world and the ether, whereas Coyote does not physically exist. Coyote was only an artifact of the flawed imaginations and insecurities of the man, but upon the man's death, his mind was taken into the ether, and this imagination gained life. His lack of physical existence sure explains how he can become any shape or size, specifically his abstract forms (see panel 3). Knowing Tom, though, everything I said is completely wrong and significantly less awesome than whatever inevitable future twist is in store for us. EDIT: Puts things like the etheric power station in a really disturbing light, it does. If Coyote can be trusted, which he can't quite be, but still. Yeeeessss.... We must harvest the humans. I like this twist more than I should. One could say I'm twisted! ....I'll show myself out

So gods are made of dead humans' souls? Maybe in the ether is the energy that living humans once had, returned by the guides when the humans died, thus keeping not only the gods' world spinning but also that of the currently-living humans. That latter part I speculated on quite a while back. ;D And welcome to the forums, new people!

Hmm. I have a feeling that Annie is about to have yet another of those bright ideas. I wouldn't say "controls", but he definitely swims in it. He is one of... the bigger fish! ;D Looks like we've got Coyote figured for once. Enjoy it while it lasts. Well, yeah. I thought that was a one-off line! I guess Tom just wants to mess with us all... Well, of course he does. Welcome to the club. Knowing Tom, though, everything I said is completely wrong and significantly less awesome than whatever inevitable future twist is in store for us. ...and so I come once again to Coyote claiming Gunnerkrigg Court's goal is to become God. Since the Court itself is rather enigmatic and imagination-capturing, it certainly could become such a... "crystallization seed", just like that scavenger who led to the Coyote. But he didn't say it about the Court itself. He said "[The Court] is man's endeavour to become God".

So, what does this mean for Annie's fire elemental soul?

And in the first panel of the next strip, Obi-Wan Kenobi will appear to tell Annie she's made her first step into a wider universe.
And yes, the knowledge of where the ether comes from and the fact that it's apparently the Lifestream (tm) makes the Court's power station really, really, really creepy.

I can't for the life of me remember where that last panel came from Anyone care to enlighten me? I agree with the other posts in this thread, though. Really adds a whole lot of "disturbing" to the crazy pot...

I can't for the life of me remember where that last panel came from Anyone care to enlighten me? Here, one of the final pages of Chapter 16: A Ghost Story. I seem to remember Tom saying somewhere at about that time that this statement would be elaborated on at a later time. It did. Also noteworthy in this context might be Rey's quote here in Chapter 27: Spring Heeled.

This also makes what Annie's dad is trying to do really really creepy, and Zimmys need to feel REAL rain that has ether in it really really creepy x-x and lets not try and think about if this means the court robots have actual souls.
...this update BLEW my mind.

So, what does this mean for Annie's fire elemental soul? I was wondering the same thing. Perhaps, Coyote was only referring to his own origins, and Annie's and Surma's line has more of an elemental history.

So gods are made of dead humans' souls? More like life is made of dead life. I take this is a metaphor for the cycle of nature where dead things feed new life, or even of the first law of thermodynamics: energy can't be created or destroyed. But yeah, apparently gods are patterns in the Ether itself, which I might have guessed, but I feel like we're still lacking the final punchline to qualify this is as a Great Secret. Also, I hope that Annie will protest about Coyote's earlier statement, that he "does not exist". That's a fairly big stretch by any definition of nonexistence.

Anyone else reminded of Full Metal Alchemist? Yes, it does. But it also makes an absurd amount of sense for how the ether works in a really, really cool way.

So, nothing new today. But next comic (which is on a Wednesday) will surely bring surprises. If you take his "I do not exist" completely literally, he has successfully tricked you. Semantic trickery isn't very impressive, though. Anyone can communicate poorly.
