Very hot indeed. All right, of all things I may have given thought this is surely not one of them. I'm thinking it's either Coyote's bind or Annie's scar.

What are these white thingies? They kinda look like bone.

Teeth, maybe?
I also notice Zimmy's hair is losing style there, I wonder what it means. That and the fact she's flying.

Five what looks like bones, with some kinda creepy reddish black aura.
Fingers maybe? Kinda disturbing since they're going to her heart.
Whoops, didn't see that right, looks more like her lower stomach... Solar Plexus maybe?

We have already seen Coyote's teeth arranged in a circle like that once this chapter, so it seems very likely that this is about the bind. For some reason I really didn't want that to be what was hurting Annie. I guess I just like Coyote and want to forget that he can be a bastard.

Oh, you didn't know? Your ass better call somebody! - New Age Outlaws catchphrase, which seems disturbingly likely to be an accurate response to Zimmy right about now...
(I think the white things are infinitely extended versions of Annie's arms, but who knows?)

I thought the teeth/bones/whatever represented her father's influence, "binding" the fire inside her, as it were.

Bones... like skeletal fingers, going for the glowing heart of the elemental... Jeanne pincer gripping Annie's love?

WHAO. man this is interesting O-O
Does the little fire elemental represent her 'inner flame' ? Or something else?
(love the panel format and how it shows Zimmy traveling down the hair tunnel seamlessly.)

So cookies for those who notice the likeness between the mask and fire elemental face.
The style on this page is... different, somehow, weirdly, like it actually looks like Zimmy at the bottom of the picture was drawn by someone else than Tom (not that it looks bad nor that I'm suggesting it was actually drawn by someone else, it looks fine and you're doing a fine work, Tom)!

I thought the teeth/bones/whatever represented her father's influence, "binding" the fire inside her, as it were. Related: the red/orange color is drained away at the center where Annie's elemental self lives. That could be symbolic of her fire being bound, or it could just be Tom's way of showing that it's hotter there.

Well Zimmy, I imagine it would get pretty hot under that mop!
Whoever got the mask to fire-elemental link last week: well spotted!
Carver(?) seems bound/skewered by those rods. What are they made of? Bone? Wood? Ice?
Umbilicus?
(I don't think the black aura's significant. It's just to enhance contrast)
btw: either Kat has an *extremely* vivid imagination, or this really is about Annie. #switching

(love the panel format and how it shows Zimmy traveling down the hair tunnel seamlessly.) Seconded, the art and perspective are extremely well done: don't know how Tom managed to conceive of doing this as a single panel but he's pulled it off brilliantly.

Called the etheric-flowyness-scene.
The ... spears, for lack of a better term; we don't know what they're made of after all - are all coming from the front. They look a bit like... pincers? Claws? There are 5 of them... Also, I'd like to point out the crown symbol over Carver-elemental's head. The same as that from Fire Spike.
A worthy thing to note is that Zimmy's demeanor has completely changed. No longer is she brusque, aggressive and sarcastic. Here we see her actually concerned. Look at her expression - I don't think we've ever seen that on her face before. The closest I can think of (excluding the previous page) is the first time we saw her in the rain.
Also, well done on the hair-tunnel (?) scene, Tom. It looks awesome. While reading the page I had music from Star Trek: The Motion Picture in my head. May have helped that I literally just watched that movie again...

Apologies for the double-post, but I forgot something - and I suspect this thread moves quickly enough for an edit to go unnoticed by someone who had already read the original post. But on the spears: Do they look at all like over-sized strands of spiderweb to anyone else?

Congratulations, Zimmy - you opened that blast door. By the way, the room behind it is called "blast furnace". I thought the teeth/bones/whatever represented her father's influence, "binding" the fire inside her, as it were. Or, more generally: human flesh-and-blood half. If so, this may be the sort of access needed to reach the core of their essence leak problem. Bones... like skeletal fingers, going for the glowing heart of the elemental... Jeanne pincer gripping Annie's love? That would be weird. After all, why? Though if my guess that the blinker was Jeanne's (and that's how she crossed the river) is true, such link may be potentially unhealthy.

Don't think so. Annie acquired her blinkstone from Mort, who gave it to her at the bidding of Muut.
Muut was initially unaware of who Jeanne was, although he was concerned about the Guides' inability to reach her.
...Then again, if Jeanne had done something to the blinkstone when she had control of it in Chapter 30...? (That was a while ago now... at least 4-5 months in story time)

Those things don't look quite like teeth should, any self respecting dog would clean his teeth by gnawing something. Quite possibly Jeanne's fingers? her bony dead fingers? Course they're far too long. Guess we'll find out next page what exactly they are (whoo.) So cookies for those who notice the likeness between the mask and fire elemental face. I agree, it does look a little different. I think Tom's artwork and grasp of techniques is still changing and improving and this is a result of that. As for why Zimmy stands out, ask yourself this, have we ever seen her in full "light"? Oh, you didn't know? Your ass better call somebody! Ingenious! I smirked. (Of course I also had Kane's entrance theme stuck in my head here. +1 internets to you! With all that out of the way I might be taking a small break from posting on the forums. I'm trying to get a job at the moment with no money and little in the way to help, and I need more time in the day than it seems I have. I'm hoping to be back soon, able to buy the Renardine plushies and excellent shirts as I see fit. (AND THOSE BOOKS.) Before I go I'd like to say something to all the people posting here, Gunnerkrigg Court is a wonderful comic, with excellent art, an engaging storyline, a creative adaptive author who just makes you wanna give the guy a hug and 20 dollars with every page, and for the most part the fans are wonderful welcoming people with great minds, senses of humor that make you wish they were all comedians, and an attitude that makes you feel like you know these people, you like these people, these people are always your friends. So get along. No telling someone off because they don't think like you do. I posted in a thread calling the woman who made "rape culture" accusations against Goblins a bit of a crazy idiot. I don't feel bad about it. I still feel it to be true. As someone who's dealt with abuse and the mental repercussions it has on your life, I feel I'm entitled to be uppity when someone uses that as an excuse for being a substandard human being. I do however feel bad that I might not have been following the general rules of civility here, when I said it. Lastly I'd like to say to everyone here, Thank you. New and old you've made reading these forums with every new comic release a blast, and I hope you're still at it (and better at it than before if possible)when I return. see ya around Spacemonauts! [Insert TARDIS noises here]

WHAO. man this is interesting O-O Does the little fire elemental represent her 'inner flame' ? Or something else? (love the panel format and how it shows Zimmy traveling down the hair tunnel seamlessly.) As far as I know, Annie IS a fire elemental. Her mother was too, and kinda gave all her "fire" to birth Annie (this is why she died), this is allegedly why Anthony is upset with his daughter. Also Annie's hair was slightly less colorful at first, is this related to her inner fire elemental being "contained" like this? If so, this development must've been recent. Someone, or something could be attacking or containing Annie.

So I have two theories, one a little more far fetched than the other.
First theory, it's linked to the scar, causing some etheric chain of events (as yet to be determined, maybe etheric nasties could get in via the cut) that Jeanne knew would happen. Perhaps the fire elemental is the part of Annie that's free to love whereas her human side is far too repressed. That's where Jeanne would target.
Second theory, is that it's something to do with the code that Antony spoke. There seemed like there should be a reason why Donny didn't want Annie to say it aloud, maybe they have been anticipating something. It seems far fetched but perhaps Antony was ready to trigger something that he felt would rid Annie of her fire elemental half without killing her. The heart would be a likely target for this process.
On another note, wouldn't it be cool if Zimmy had to use the Coyoto Tooth to cut those bone-like things?
