I sort of started wondering whether Donny's influence would have some impact on making A&A a somewhat-less-dysfunctional-family sometime in the future (assuming a lot of preconditions are met, of course).

As much as I feel for Tony here--I've know kids like those as a teacher and I've been a kid like that--I gotta say, that is the most awesome smirk I have ever seen in this comic. And from Annie no less.

Also, if me and my family are not in dire financial straits ourselves right now I'd gladly order all three books so far made (I've been saving up to do so since, well, since I've started following the comic).



Laugh all you want, but that can be terrifying to certain people with major emotional and/or social. I know firsthand that for many emotionally closed off people the very concept of someone showing interest that's not negative is so alien it ends up being quite troubling and suspicious. It took me until my later high school and early college to not react like that to such situations, and that was through active effort to improve. Hell, I've tried to help several students with similar problems do the same as a teacher.

It's easy to laugh looking from the outside-in when one is relatively well-adjusted, but it's no easy thing living through it, much less trying to change from it.

Especially without taking into account what may cause it. Me? I became emotionally closed off due to being a bully-magnet since kindergarten (as in, got tossed into trash cans and held down and beaten kind of bullying). Other students I know with similar personalities were likewise bullied, were emotionally or physically or even sexually abused, were abusively neglected, and so on.

Then there are some who find the prospect of a hot girl liking you suspicious when they've experienced getting strung along only to be openly rejected as a sick prank. That's thankfully never happened to me, but I saw a poor kid get "treated" to exactly that when I was teaching. During prom night. In front of everyone. That kid was devastated. The faculty had no idea how to treat that one since and, to my disgust, it ended up being settled with pretty much a slap on the wrists for the prankster and her friends.

Now, we don't know what made Tony his maladjusted self. But that's besides the point. Whatever made him that way made him so suspicious and socially introverted that people showing interest in him is a traumatic experience. And unless you've lived through the mindset, I really can't explain the experience to you.

Sorry if this is a little ranty, but I've heard way too much insensitive "get over it, freak" and the like statements directed at myself and my students even when we've tried our damndest to actively change that comments of a similar nature are rather irritating to me. Especially when they come from people who don't know what it's like.

There is a reason Donny is telling Annie this story. I just have no idea what it is.

I had one of those moments back where Annie nearly choked on the glass of water. I've been in that exact situation where a minor thing just starts the emotional cascade, and you just barely hold it back. It hurt reading that page because there is just nothing like a total emotional breakdown like that. I'm not sure even her little fire episode could have compared to a clean and simple mental break down the middle.

Life is hard, but the great thing about being human is not having to do anything alone. Feel free to vent. Internet people are just pixels, and you're a long way away from being able to hurt a pixel's feelings.

I do enjoy Donny's self awareness of how his statement is generalization of women.

I thought we would have to wait forever to see the backstory of the parents...now i'm getting more hopeful.
