Click here for the new page. Yay! More Brinnie! Note the arm band and bracelet combo. Someone better at the mythology than me will justify their presence. And we're on tenterhooks for the weekend. As usual. But that gives us all the more time to obsess and construct elaborate theories. We know how the story ends -- "Tony" ends up with Surma. But how will he get there? This also throws a spanner in the Eglamore-Carver-Stibnite triangle. I wonder what "the old man" thinks of it.

Brinnie is so pretty! And it's cool to see Tony in panic mode.
On an added note, Tom quit his job for Gunnerkrigg.

The last four panels also form an interesting contrast to pages in Chapter 13 when Kat was going crazy for Aly.
EDIT: Also, the first panel kind of crushes "OOOOH MAYBE THEY'RE OLDER NOW" line of thought for this flashback, since neither of them look older than Antimony or Kat there.

a few thoughts: 1) Good luck to Tom in all his business endeavors! for many people it's difficult to make that decision and i wish him the best of luck!! and 2) now we know where Annie got her obliviousness! 3) poor Tony, his conviction that everything has a rational conclusion and solution will break his heart eventually.

Its never more clear how different Kat and Annie are compared to their parents then when we get a flash back.
Though Kat and Her dad seem to be alot alike.

Congratulations, Tom!!!
Never thought I'd be saying this, but Tony, I feel for ya man. I really do.
Also, I want to see Tony try to invent some sort of romance-detecting machine to scientifically solve the problem of whether or not he likes Brinnie, because Donnie's answer is unacceptable and that's the kind of guy he is. "I shall construct a robotic romance-detection device to solve this emotional riddle!"

Congrats to Tom for having the guts to step onto unsure ground. 2) now we know where Annie got her obliviousness! I dunno, Annie was completely oblivious to Parley and Smits need for privacy, but here Tony is aware of Brinnie's crush, just unsure of what to do. And the one time Annie did become aware of someone else's attraction to her, she used the knowledge to mess with his emotions. Tony's comment reminded me of this video.

I definitely love Brinny)))) And Anthony in panic mode is so cute) P.S.: Congratulations, Tom! ...I shall construct a robotic romance-detection device to solve this emotional riddle!" With two crazy-look electrodes in head?))) And more important question in whose head they will be, by knowing his daughter)

I may just have too much Sherlock on the brain after having obsessively re-watched the series for the second time this week (still trying to figure out the trick in the last episode, so many hidden clues) but can someone please tell me I'm not crazy for looking at this page and mentally replacing Tony and Donny's names with Sherlock and John. I mean holy crap, just look at Tony. He's pulling a perfect Sherlock impression in every. single. panel.
This puts an amazing new spin on his character, you guys. He didn't abandon Annie to go dick around for two years, he's hunting down Gunnerkrigg Moriarty and solving impossible murders. It all makes sense now.

Whoa, it feels like the "how well we know Anthony" meter went through the roof. Maybe because he acts more human now than all the other times we've seen him taken together. It's fitting, actually, that it's Donny narrating, he seems to be one of maybe two people who really knew him.

And yes, I'm a bit of a Sherlock obsessive too. The second to last panel makes me love young Tony a little, 'Not helping, Donny!' I just can't begin to fathom what's happened and why Antony's abandoned Annie like he has. Believe me, I've tried to come up with a theory but there's just not enough to go on. This chapter has me willing time away, I'm living for Monday now.

All I'm thinking is "Chapter 37, the one where we realize we don't actually know a god damn thing about Anthony". That dude totally called it.

Whoa, it feels like the "how well we know Anthony" meter went through the roof. Maybe because he acts more human now than all the other times we've seen him taken together. It's fitting, actually, that it's Donny narrating, he seems to be one of maybe two people who really knew him. YES, yes see that's what I'm talking about with the Sherlock thing. The characterization of Sherlock Holmes and Watson in the new BBC series fits this page just perfectly. Holmes' characterization in this version is that at first glance he's an uncaring sociopath, but when he interacts with Watson it becomes obvious that he actually just has no idea how to deal with people on a normal level. If we assume that the same character archetype is applicable to Anthony then we can extrapolate SO MANY things about his personality and motivations. Every time he's being an emotionless dick, is it because he honestly doesn't care about his daughter or because he doesn't understand how to tell her that he loves her? Did he abandon her knowing full well how upset she'd be, or did it not even occur to him that she might be hurt by his absence? Giving him a secret awkward side just instantly added +1000 interest points to his character in my view. (And seeing him act and speak exactly like Sherlock for however many panels was just delicious icing on the cake for my inner fangirl.) In one page I have gone from complete indifference to rabid fascination with Anthony Carver and I have no doubts that is exactly what Tom intended to happen.

I very much like this comic and the writing has been excellent. But something about the last two pages stuck in my teeth like like a popcorn kernel. Kat and Annie are best friends. Surma and Anja are best friends. Donald and Anthony are friends. Coincidence threshold exceeded: suspension of disbelief overloaded.

Well, to those holding out for a cold, robotic younger Tony... tough luck. Gotta love plot developments, eh?
Also, ha ha, new catchphrase. Although now I just can't stop seeing Anthony as the Earl of Lemongrab from Adventure Time.

Less engineered, more encouraged.
If the two of them didn't really get along well, they wouldn't have become friends in the first place.

I have two aunts and an uncle that I know of whose respective spouses were from their own circle of childhood friends.

I think Antimony was completely aware that Parley and Smitty were having "a moment" in that comic and she shut them down on purpose. Check out Antimony's facial expression in panels 1-2. But to address the main point, so Anthony once was a teen who had no idea how to deal with girls and hid his discomfort with a poker face. With our current scant info on his motives and emotional states I don't think we can conclude anything from that about his current level of dickitude. Attila the Hun was once an awkward tween and Adolf Hitler was the most adorable baby in Ranshofen. If we later learn that yes, Anthony is an absentee and emotionally-unavailable dad by reasons of intrigue and lack of people skills then we can look back to today's comic as part of a pattern.
