The return of sad Annie?

Two things about this page. One, the narrations have returned after a long absence. Two, Annie has reverted back to the quiet girl she was in the early chapters, determined to remain calm and not show emotion while everyone else freaks out.
I think these go hand-in-hand. It just occurred to me that the lack of narration in the recent chapters corresponds to Annie becoming more comfortable around people. However, the sudden return of here father into her life has caused her to revert to the girl she was at the start of the comic. Remember that her quiet personality was largely a result of her father's influence.
Also, I don't think the placing of the crack behind her head is accidental either. A lot of the confidence she spent the last two years building up has broken. Hopefully not permanently.

Oh no, Annie's shutting down. That last panel breaks my heart. Hug her Kat, don't let her become cold again.
Also, Donnie looks like he's having a brood in the corner. I also find it especially interesting that although we've been told Eglamore is angry, we're not seeing his face.
Again, Kat, emergency hug required. Move!

I'm afraid Mr. Eglamore may be a tiny... little... bit... cornered. Heh, heh, heh. ;D Two, Annie has reverted back to the quiet girl she was in the early chapters, determined to remain calm and not show emotion while everyone else freaks out. I think these go hand-in-hand. It just occurred to me that the lack of narration in the recent chapters corresponds to Annie becoming more comfortable around people. She learns the way of Esmeralda Weatherwax: "don't do walls of fire, do thermal lances".

Remember that her quiet personality was largely a result of her father's influence. Which can be best summed up as the crack in the wall behind her head. Her happy world(view) is slowly cracking.

Trust Eglamore to be a huge dick about it. Hey, Eglamore, it's not about you; it's about Anthony and Antimony.

This page is gorgeous. I love Egg's pose in first panel, as well as the group dynamics and Anja's "morticia" dress. The crack in the wall is simply perfect, both symbolically and in how it fills the panel, while the text box appears very distant from Antimony herself.

I always liked that about this comic, how the scenes and panels change to fit the characters emotions.

"The call didn't even make sense" with no explanation of why. WHAT DID I TELL YOU GUYS.
Oh well it's only the first page maybe we'll get to see what he said on Wednesday.
In other news I'm loving how just through Eglamore and Donny's poses you can tell they both totally want to punch Anthony in his stupid face, while Anja is trying to defend him with "well maybe there's a good reason..." But where's Jones? You'd think she'd be hanging around if only to get her cell phone back.

Interesting layout too. It's much more formal and rigid than recent strips.

For a moment there I was subconsciously expecting Annie's head to have a shape like in the early chapters

Two things about this page. One, the narrations have returned after a long absence. They were last seen at Page 294 right? Way back when I read that I remember I assumed that they would return when Annies father did...

Is it just me, or does the last panel resemble the last shot of Psycho?

Poor Annie. Her blank and sad face looks like Jeanne's. I love how Tom still always points out Eglamore. It's okay, we can recognise him, haha!

While I'd like to talk about how sad this page is (and it is sad ), I'm distracted by the fact that the narration seems to have gone from describing events in past tense to a mix of past and present tense.

Donald just sort of looks like he yelled "Screw this, you guys handle this crap" and flipped and table and then stormed off. That was literally the first coherent thought I had about this page. Eggers is doing his "let my hair get fairly long and then chop it really short" thing again, it seems- last time we saw him it was just a bit shaggy, but now it's a bit longer. Perhaps Jones will give him a trim?? Also, hm: I wonder if the setting was chosen for atmospheric purposes (quite effective if it is) or for a plot reason. Or both. If plot is involved, why does a call from Tony mean being put in a small sealed room? In any case, it can't be too serious business if Kat is allowed in, so I don't think a big Court secret was spilled or anything. I wonder what Anja is thinking. She seems sympathetic, but even Donald (who seems to have been the one closest to Tony as a kid judging from formspring answers) is all huffy. I am going to assume until further pages prove me wrong that Tony's call didn't make sense because he was in space. There's no other reason. He's hanging out with Enigmarons in space.

Trust Eglamore to be a huge dick about it. Hey, Eglamore, it's not about you; it's about Anthony and Antimony. Pretty understandable why everyone but Annie is being upset about it. Annie _finally_ stopped an "ice queen" or "stuck-up bitch" and started to enjoy herself. One call from Anthony and 2 years of progress is seemingly down the drain. Combine that with the fact that Anthony, someone who he apparently never got along with, ended up with the gal Eglamore was head over heels for...

Perhaps this was where the early narration was coming from? And now that we've passed that point, the narration is actually internal dialogue and thus in present tense. And actually there's more narration at the start of chapter 15. Maybe it dropped off once Kat got tired of Annie's over-literary method of storytelling and took over for the second half of the "30 chapters of exposition."

It's weird because another webcomic I'm reading has also just started a chapter about an awkward daughter-father reunion.

I still think that the significance of the picture on the title page was that the phone call was made via satellite (like plenty of phone calls).
Count me as another person surprised that Annie's narration is back, which we hadn't seen since Chapter Fifteen. I thought that Tom had dropped the idea.

Wow, lately it's been so easy to forget that Annie is, more or less, an abandoned child. The very idea that her father just dumped her and ran had honestly slipped my mind with how well things have been going for Annie.
I'd wager Annie's position in her father's life is one of the things getting the adults so bent out of shape. I could see the overprotective Eglamore saying they shouldn't let someone who'd abandon his own daughter take her back. Even if the father gave no indication of doing so, it would be a natural fear. Anja takes on the role of understanding peacemaker, naturally. Mister Pouty in the back probably agrees with both of them to an extent.
I've never been right about this comic before though. So beh.

I love the last panel. The crack and the messy hair seem to be more showing of how she's feeling than her expression is (or maybe I'm looking too far into things)

Also, notice that she is referring to ppl with the generic term "some", rather than using names. Yeah, she's retreated back into herself like a boss.
Hope it's temporary.

Also, I'm guessing whatever didn't make sense to Annie means a lot more to Eglamore, Anja and Donnie.

Hmm, I'm entertaining thoughts of mental conditioning. The 'It didn't even make sense' bit made me think of a code-word, so maybe Annies been reprogrammed over the phone!
Just a thought that came to me.

Hmm, I'm entertaining thoughts of mental conditioning. The 'It didn't even make sense' bit made me think of a code-word, so maybe Annies been reprogrammed over the phone! Just a thought that came to me. Haha oh snap like a secret phrase to revert her to robot-mode whenever she gets too dangerously emotional? That would be exactly the sort of problem solving I'd expect from Anthony. "My daughter shoots fire when she gets mad? Relax, guys. I got this." On a similar note my brother mentioned a bit ago that it would be interesting/terrifying/hilarious if Jones and Anthony turned out to be the same type of thing, or at least very similar. Perhaps Jones is a master level emotionless automaton, while Anthony is still a young padawan who has not yet hardened his exoskeleton (since he cries in Fire Spike, and we have no evidence that he's impervious to swords). More of a WMG than anything but it would provide at least a bit of explanation for why he called Jones of all people when he wanted to talk to his daughter. How did he even know Jones was likely to be anywhere near Annie, let alone with her at that moment? IT'S A CONSPIRACY.
