Kudos to those who guessed Shadow2 would be able to act in 3D now. (Also, Max, love the link phrase )

This has been the most horrifying three pages in the entire comic. I hope Shadow will be alright. D:

I think Parley has never really psychologically dealt with the fact that her sword is a deadly weapon... here she was thinking of Robot as a person, friend, and sparring partner, and sliced him in two.
(Granted, in his case it's just a major repair job, but that isn't what the back 2/3 of her brain is thinking.)
It would not be super-surprising if she has a hard time picking up ANY sword for a while... of course how long a while it would be varies wildly from one person to the next, from "five minutes" (shorter if in combat) to "the rest of her life" and lots of points in between.

Whoa, looks like the sword not only sliced Robot in half it also separated Shadow from him. Parley is right to freak out, and damn lucky it wasn't a flesh and blood being.

No wait... is shadow dying? The last panel has put a lump in my throat, is anyone else thinking along those lines? He's lost his spinal chain, that can't be good at all. Oh god.
Ugh, I really shouldn't have been listening to emotion enhancing Damien Rice songs for this page, it has thrown me completely out of whack.

Robot's spinal chain was cut, but he'll be alright, I don't think any of what makes him "him" was damaged. It's about time he was upgraded into a new body anyway. But yeah, I... I think Shadow might be dying, or seriously hurt. I don't think this is a case of "oh cool, now he can move in 3D". The implication is that his species SHOULDN'T be separated from surfaces like this, and he's now very badly injured.

I misread who the spinal chain comment was meant for, I thought it was something to do with Shadow that made him... well a shadow. I'm going to need a hug.

Welcome to 3D Shadow2. We don't really know whether he is dying, the 'bad guy' shadow didn't shift dimensions when dying and Shadow2 isn't 'pooling'/going all blurry like the 'bad guy' shadow did when wounded. He could just be feeling horrible because he is experiencing a new dimension that Shadowmen suppousedly aren't suppoused to be able to do.
I suppouse this is like us being suddendly able to experience a new dimension, it would be a very strange experience.
He's still as flat as a steamrolled cartoon character though.

I'm glad to see she jumped back far enough to avoid the sword when she dropped it. (Ahem.) I've done that myself with things less dangerous than Coyote's Tooth, so I think I can sympathize. It's understandable. So...will Shadow die, or recover with time? (Me, I'm still curious about Gunnerkrigg Court itself. It seems hauntingly vast. ...And I wanna meet the little paypul with whom Annie stayed! Please? It wouldn't change much, would it? Sorry, off-topic.) =)

... I really hope shadow 2 gets some new powers here. Welcome to the third dimension! *Hands an entire jar of called-it-cookies to vebyast.* It appears that Shadow2 no longer qualifies as shadowlike, but is in the process of turning into a real physical being. I wonder if Coyote was aware that something like this could happen and if this was the reason for him wanting Annie to keep the Tooth secret while she was in the forest. I wouldn't be surprised now if the Giggleblade is actually unable to hurt Shadow2. Hey, maybe we'll get a glorious swordfighter duo of teleporting Parley with a longsword and morphing Shadow2 with the Giggleblade tag-teaming on Jeanne!

So is Pearl just a nickname, or affectionate name, like 'sweetie'? Or is there something more to it? I think shadow will be fine, and once he is used to it, will quite enjoy being able to move in an extra dimension.

I'm not worried, I doubt Shadow would be killed off in such a undramatic situation, and other than feeling kinda bad (being cut off your usual dimension is probably kinda traumatic) I don't think he's seriously wounded either. Jesus this chapter took a turn for the worst quickly huh? I don't think we'll see the Giggleblade much after this, it's one thing to know a weapon is deadly and another to almost see it kill something.

All those who breathed a sigh of relief at Shadow not being cut breathed too soon, apparently.
Now we know that Shadowmen need to be essentially shadow-like to stay healthy.

Where did the sword go? Did it revert back to the tooth form, perhaps? (A bit late, if so...)
So, Antimony is talking to Shadow2, who is undergoing a metamorphosis, possibly permanent, and Kat is checking out Robot, and Parley is doing a complete meltdown.
Next week will see Parley recover her resolve, tempered with caution. Shadow2 will help Kat fix Robot up with a new body, which he's been due for for a while. Robot and Shadow2 will remain inseparable, but because they want to be, no longer as a matter of necessity.
Antimony will be impatient to press on with the project, but less obvious about it than she was after the encounter with Jeanne, having grown considerably since then.
Smitty being there is why things worked out well (despite Robot's current difficulties) and no permanent damage resulted. What were the chances that Coyote's Tooth would fall in _just_ that way, after all?

Oh no, oh no, oh no Add me to the list of people really worried about Shadow 2. I'm not actually crying yet, since I'm still holding on to a shred of hope that he'll be OK and is just feeling weird 'cause he's adjusting to 3 dimensions, but if something happens to the little guy I know the waterworks are gonna start. Poor Shadow! He was the first 'person' (other than Annie) that we met at the Court, and he's so sweet and adorable ("Princess Kat"?). I really hope he's okay.

Hey everyone, just wanted to mention something.
Looking at the comic, doesn't it seem like the "spinal chain" quote may be referring to Robot? Kat would be more likely to know robot morphology than shadow, after all -- Annie would be the one who knew about etheric creatures.
I don't know, but it seems like Kat speaks to Robot, then walks Parley away, then comes back to pick up Robot (you can see arm in the last panel, and Annie is sitting by Shadow2).

Welcome to the forums DB Also, that's Smitty, not Kat, the perspective is that she is off camera, plus different clothes. Anyways, for a second I did think the spinal chain might have been at Shadow, but then realized that it was for Robot as his spinal column (or chain as she called it) was severed. Anyways, since Robot had origionally sneaked in, I wonder how they are going to get the pieces out of there without anybody noticing if Parley is too traumatized to blip to Kats workshop.... As far as Shadowmen needing to be shadowlike to stay healthy, that was before Shadow2s apparent metamorphosis, so for all we know, that rule might not apply anymore. For Shadow at least. On a little lighter note, assuming Shadow is okay after this, I wonder if he'll learn how to vibrate the air itself? He's essentially a membrane.
