Tom's said, and many industrious members of the board have discovered, that Kate Rusby has been a (large) influence on him. I admit I hadn't heard of her, not being in folk music muchly. Well, she was on my local news this evening, Look North on the BBC. Turns out she's a South Yorkshire lass, from just over the way in Barnsley, and has a broad Barnsley accent {*}, as can be heard here (click 'Watch latest edition in full' for the streamed video, she does a short interview starting at 19.55mins, then there's her singing live at the end of the show for about a minute). Unfortunately the show probably won't be up for much longer, 'cause there's another edition starting on TV right now. But I'm still posting this 'cause it made me smile, especially as one of the members of the board said her singing helped them (sorry, I forget who it was) place Annie's voice--her singing voice is very different from her speaking voice; I don't really imagine Annie with my local accent
Erm, so considering that maybe this should just be a thread to discuss her infulence?
{*} We don't all speak like the Queen, and them people what in films.

I've got to admit that I can't imagine Annie with a strong Yorkshire accent; she seems too elegant for that.

I'm having a little trouble getting that BBC video working on my comp. Thankfully, she has a bunch of live videos on youtube. Here's her performing "Sir Eglamore". She talks for a few minutes at the end of the song. (Fjodor originally linked to that video in the Wild Speculation thread.)
Hmm... When Tom said that he imagines Annie sounding like Kate Rusby, I wonder if he meant her speaking voice or singing voice.

Try to imagine Rusby's speaking accent as if someone has tried to rid it with a deft scrubbing of a wire brush. Also take out any slang and colloquialisms and you'd be about there.

That definitely sounds like Annie. I can't imagine her using slang or colloquialisms.

That'll happen to your accent when you learn a bunch of new languages from psychopomps at age six.

I do admit that she's got a nice voice in that video. If only I could understand a single word she's singing. Is that even English? >_<
Mind you, I'm from the States. We more or less took the English language, mashed it into a fine paste, twisted it into an unrecognizable monster, then put a leash on it.
