How very strange.
Annie is superbly nonchalant about the whole thing, and Kat is super determined because Annie decided it wasn't a big deal. Annie spent a whole summer in the woods.. so I'm not shocked at that. Though Kat seems to only be saying that because Annie has no problem with it.
Copy Kat.

Spending the whole night out. With boys.
Wouldn't surprise me if the reason for the difference in reactions is that Annie hasn't considered the possible implications of this, and Kat has.

Let's see if we can guess the guest list. If I am not mistaken we've got Janet and William, John and Margo, Jack and Antimony, Paz, Kat, and Matt. If there are romantic notions afoot then etiquette demands one more boy be invited, or at the very least some other excellent diversion for the 5th wheel.

Are Margo's glasses ever actually in front of her eyes or just she just wear them as a fashion accessory?

Maybe she's farsighted, so she only needs them for reading.

Spending the whole night out. With boys. Wouldn't surprise me if the reason for the difference in reactions is that Annie hasn't considered the possible implications of this, and Kat has. Probably. Annie pulled these night-time escapades and ignored inconvenient rules even before she ran away and became a footloose and fancy-free forest girl. To Kat it is a Big Deal but to Annie it is Tuesday. Also, Kat seems to be super-involved with this thing, what with the robots and all, so Annie probably assumed Kat was cool with this whole thing without stopping to think if the out-all-night part would change anything for Kat. Tom's done an excellent job of depicting the cool dominant girl/trying to be cool sidekick relationship that is so very common in schools. Annie and Kat are closer friends than most of those pairs, but in moments like this, you know which one is the self-confident cool girl and which one admires and wishes to but can't quite emulate those aspects of her friend.

Jack can realize that he and Kat are made for each other, and Kat can forgive his insults. That leaves Annie by herself, and she seems to prefer it that way. Q.E.D.

Matt and Paz were chatting during the residential. (I'm sure we can take this page and extrapolate that Paz and Matt are an item from this one page. Obviously.) They don't really need to be an item to be paired up socially for a sleepover, particularly at this age. I would expect it is more about keeping company while those people so inclined disappear for extended periods of time... unless the comic is preparing to take a turn for truly unexpected territory. But yes, all lurking shippers please report to the starting gates. Thanks, I had forgotten Paz and Matt were seen talking. And Antimony chatted up a blonde in panel one of that same comic. I wonder if what Antimony wants is as important as the expectations of whoever's making the social arrangements for this evening (Janet?). Anyway: It was formspring'd that meet was not their first planned meeting, and that Kat was not informed by Antimony these meetings were taking place, and also this. Jack may not have given up or not gotten the message even if Antimony is resolute and has informed him she wishes to remain uncoupled or otherwise demonstrated same since she returned.

Romance is afoot.
I predict that Jack will make a move in Annie. It will not go well.

Paz is blushing. Kat has the tiny eyes of freaked-outness.
Matt looked pretty crappy the next day, so either sleeping on the ground really got to him or he was worried about Paz all night. And she was going to share chocolate with him!
Anyway - Kat's freaked out, and this night is going to last a long time if the chapter title is any indication. I hope Reynardine gets to come. To fend off Jack, if nothing else.

After this page, I'll say all the more that the purpose of this sneaking-out had better be important; being stuck outside all night, unable to return to the dorms until morning, for the sake of just seeing more sparks flying from the power station or something like that doesn't seem worth it.
(Comparisons between this comic and "Harry Potter" are overdone, I know, but I felt reminded of Harry's repeated sneaking out to Hogsmeade in "Prisoner of Azkaban", for no better reason than a desire to see the sights - and when Remus Lupin finds out, he rebukes Harry for it, endangering himself for something so trivial. I half-want to see Lindsay typing out a similar rebuke on the console when/if she finds out.)

Wait, am I getting it right? Kat is asking the (likely) most rebellious and least interested in romance of their group if she's okay with a night out? Made me laugh. : D

Message to Tom: Man, you're artwork continues to improve in leaps and bounds. Too many fine points to mention but the perspective is spot on, the fluid motion of the characters is great... Annie's "I'm cool" shrug, the gestures....
okay at some point I've gone from posting a complement to full on fan-girl squeee.... *regains composure* Good Job Dude!

So dorm security can't keep them in, but it can keep them out. Lindsey and the court should be proud.

Wouldn't surprise me if the reason for the difference in reactions is that Annie hasn't considered the possible implications of this, and Kat has. It could also be that Annie considered it, and just doesn't care. Either way, she's almost certainly more interested in the "sneaking out" aspect.

tho imaginaryfriend it seems odd that Jack called Annie a Ice Queen (in bold) a few pages before that despite it's the opposite Jack was under the influence of the creepy spider at the time, so that may not have reflected his actual opinion (and even if it did, he would have put it more politely had he not been possessed). And Annie did make more of an effort to come out of her shell in response to possessed-Jack's barb (and some other factors), so Annie on the last day of the school year was less icy than she was at the start of the residential. And Annie had played a role in rescuing him from the spider, so it makes sense that he would be attracted to her.

I bet even if Antimony has considered the fact that the boys will be there, it wouldn't matter to her as much as it does Kat. What with that whole inconvenient passing-down-the-spark thing, romance isn't just some silly thing you do in your wild teenage years; it's life and death. So I bet she's not even marking romantic rendezvous down as a possibility for tonight, even if the idea had occurred to her.

I don't think Annie is worried about the passing-down-the-spark thing so much as she's decided she's not interested in romance and boys. Not that she isn't interested, she is. She just thinks she isn't.

Janet is blushing, Margo is stuttering, PAZ is blushing (that one took me by surprise)... this looks to be an interesting evening out. I wonder if they'll even bother having the pretense of something scientificy, like they did last time.
I'd like to think Annie has grown a LITTLE more conscious of these matters since her meetings with Jack, or at least more than she was when dealing with Parley and Smith. It's possible she understands the implications but just doesn't care, figuring this is one of Kat's "do stuff with other people" things. And Annie has definitely grown more brazen about breaking the rules.
It's also possible that on some level she secretly likes the idea, but is trying not to show it, hence her excessive casualness. But that's speculative.
One thing I'M a little concerned about, though.... Is Robot still stalking Kat?

It's bizarre isn't it? Annie is the cool girl now! Kat and Annie used to be partners in being weirdo outcasts people wouldn't talk to. They didn't care about others thinking ill of them because they had each other. Now Annie has turned into this fire headed forest girl that spends her summers chilling out on the shoulder of Tree Bark. Kat is still Kat. The robots might think of her as an angel, but Kat herself hasn't gone under any radical character changes. Not as radical as Annie, at any rate.

Kat is asking the (likely) most rebellious and least interested in romance of their group if she's okay with a night out? It isn't that Annie isn't interested in romance at all, she just stubbornly won't admit it to herself or anyone else. Not that she isn't interested, she is. She just thinks she isn't. Exactly. What with that whole inconvenient passing-down-the-spark thing, romance isn't just some silly thing you do in your wild teenage years; it's life and death. All true. However, her knowledge of that came far after her quote about not being concerned with such things. It also doesn't mean she is not interested any longer now that she knows what will happen. She's just got some intellectual idea that if she hooks up, she'll eventually die. She hasn't yet fallen hopelessly in love with someone. Should it happen to her personally, her intellectual knowledge of her future death may not matter so much in comparison living with her love and bringing a child into the word. (I wonder if twins are even a possibility with hybrids like her?) Remember what Ysengrin said. Annie did not steal Surma's life, Surma gave it to her. I wonder how similar Annie will be to Surma in more than just appearance. It's bizarre isn't it? Annie is the cool girl now! Kat and Annie used to be partners in being weirdo outcasts people wouldn't talk to. I think it is more than this particular circle of friends views Annie more positively than before. At least until I see a lot of the other students acting at least as friendly.
