Faraway MorningThat looks like some kind of robotic insect in that pic, much more crude than Sky Watcher and lacks the green eyes typical of court robots. Or it could be some other wierd object since we're seeing the back of the other two wingplates or whatever they are. Edit: Oh yea, you can see circuitry lines on the underside of the rightmost one.

also, well played, smjjames Thanks, I guess, heh. Anyways, this is certainly one of Toms more mysterious chapter openers. He always includes the chapter openers in the chapter some way or another, sometimes symbolically like with chapter 32.

I'm putting in my guess for that mystery bug thing being the seed bismuth. (If you're gonna guess on so little information, you might as well guess big.)

Chapter 32? Or chapter 31? My guess: it's a robot Kat will make based on what she learned from reviving Frank.

Can we at least get past the cover page before people start with the speculation?

Will it be a connection to whoever (or whatever) made the mechanical birds?

it looks like a cursed tea-pot to me.

not sure why, but the totem-esque appearence kinda makes me think this one will involve the psychopomps..

"Faraway Morning" sounds like a song title from a JRPG soundtrack. So there will probably be cursed teapots.

It looks like a robotic cicada, those are summer bugs so maybe the short stories all take place at various parts of the court in the summer. Maybe the faraway morning is the day everyone goes back to classes and the stories are about everyone preparing for another rockin' school year?

I keep thinking its a rocket but the head looks like an insect. I think that in this chapter they have to start school but a series of events keeps Kat and/or Annie from getting to class.

That thing looks like a robot beetle to me. Its forewings look like elytra (i.e. hardened to serve as protection) and its hindwings look membranous.

It's Ironman as a beetle. Ironbug.

Can we at least get past the cover page before people start with the speculation? Don't be silly. This is an internet discussion board. I think the thing is Gunnerkrigg Court's version of a Dalek.

Silly speculation is one of the best parts of the new chapter pages Also the bug is very clearly Annie's father He obviously took on the form of a robot bug to keep an eye on his daughter.

yeah what ever happened Annie's dad!? Didn't at the begging of the comic Annie narrated that it would be 2 years before she would next see her father? Isn't this her second year?

That was at the end of Annie's first year. Which means, at the earliest, Annie will hear from her father at the end of her third year.
Right now we're at the start of the third year.

Ah! so the fated meeting is semi close at hand. Only a year or two of IRL time to go before we get to see Annie's fireball! *crosses fingers*

I can't believe I missed that rocket, but I wonder why the Court would have them at all. They could be carrying science equipment to study the atmosphere, or carrying sattelites. Possibly even manned craft. Anyways, yea I think I missed that rocket as well. It's also kind of hard to tell whether the second pair are coming out from the red elytra or are actually on the other side of the. ironbug, as everybody seems to have decided to call it. The head certainly looks like that of a cicada, but I don't think cicadas have elytra.

No, cicadas don't. Only beetles have elytra.

Well, the lesser-known treehoppers, which are distant cousins of cicadas, have an enlarged pronotum (which apparently was created through natural genetic recycling of the material once used for a third pair of wings—this is kind of wicked) or helmet, which on some of them does look like elytra. www.insectsofwestvirginia.net/h/membracidae.html

True, but an enlarged pronotum is stationary--it doesn't fold open like we can see the forewings of this bug doing.
