Figures it was all an attempt at drama to try and impress Kat. Or at least emulating the fun they have in the danger room.
Edit: Methinks they should have gone with a 'Destroy all humans!' routine......

Panel 2 reaffirms Tom's storytelling skills 10x. It's a great shot of the action, emphasizes Annie's desperation to patch things up, shows off her forest-child athleticism, and is a close-up to point out how her feet have become thanks to running around barefoot in the woods.

Oh, Annie. Cute idea, but not the time. How did she have time to set this up with Robot? Was this between meeting Rey and Kat coming in?

I wonder how Antimony managed to coordinate this with Robot; I guess coming back with the luggage took a fair amount of time. (Edit- Idea semi-ninja'd by Ignotus Somnium)
Also: My inaccurate assumptions about Antimony seem to have blinded me to the possibility of this scenario.
Furthermore: Nothing says, "Let's be friends again" like implying that someone's stone stupid. Not sure Antimony has enough cute power to crack Kat's not-amused facade through sheer perseverance with this strategy.

Damn, I thought her feet were just dirty from barefooting it in the forest, but those are some seriously calloused soles. She's basically got hobbit feet now.
Also, I notice from her actions and facial expressions that she's really channeling her mother's spirit now (both literally and figuratively). I wonder if realizing her connection to her mother is what's waking up Surma's spirit inside her.

All that's missing is a facepalm moment.
I bet the next comic will be an exasprated Kat going "What the hell are you trying to do Annie?".
As for coordinating it with robot, maybe she worked with Shadow2? In any case, it doesn't look like there was any time to plan it out properly and Robot just happens to be no good at roleplaying, except when he was fighting the bull thing.

Hmm, at first I thought the timing seemed like Annie found Robot and told him to go "annoy" and "inconvenience" Kat WAY too quickly. But we don't really know how far Kat went to get her bag or how long it was before Robot found her, so on second thought, it doesn't have to be that super-fast. Of course, Annie still had to set up her "plan" pretty darn quickly, but as her scheme was nothing if not hare-brained and ill-thought-out, that works. I guess Annie had the same thought as a bunch of the posters, that if she saves Kat and they work together to fix some kind of interesting problem, the two of them will make up. Doesn't work out quite so well when it's fake, does it, Annie? I definitely don't think the "old Annie" would have done something like this; it definitely seems like the kind of thing an extroverted, energetic person would do. Of course, she's not very GOOD at improvising little shows yet, but can you see stoic!Annie doing that? Which is actually quite interesting, because it's a way she's *changed* over the summer, but it's not a *mature* thing to do. It may be good for her, to be more willing to make a fool of herself and not just bottle up her feelings... but still shows that character development isn't always a steady climb upward, so to speak.

How could Kat possibly be holding a straight face? That merits doubling over in laughter! Or at least a cracked smile

It could also be that she is trying to get Kat to have some fun, but this is completely the wrong time for it.

Slight modification of your theory: Maybe it was ShadowII zipping by on the dark water to go get Robot? (Idea semi-ninja'd by smjjames)

oh the lack of the social skills. Still, this page is very win. At least it shows that Annie's not the type of girl to develop a bad attitude about this. at least not yet.

It could also be that she is trying to get Kat to have some fun, but this is completely the wrong time for it. Yeah, I have to go with this one, that Kat wasn't supposed to be fooled by the display and think it was actually real. Mostly just because the alternative has too many Unfortunate Implications-- Annie trying to deceive Kat, attempting to mend their friendship based on a lie, and so on. I don't want to think Annie has that little respect for Kat or that she would do something that manipulative, so I'm going to go with "inappropriate joke."

Judging from the quick transition from dark to light, I assumed that this portion was taking place the next morning.
Also, looks like someone's been reading people's forum suggestions for Annie to rescue Kat from evil or vice-versa in order to be friends again. ;D

I don't think the "splish" could have been Annie-- there's no indication in the panel that she's wet. (And if her feet were wet, that awesome leap-up-onto-the-railing-then-the-wall might have gone quite badly!) I thought the same thing about having to sneak by Kat at first, but the more I think about it the less I think it's necessary. Kat goes off to get a bag from we-don't-know-where. At some point when she's rolling her bag, she turns and sees Robot there. He could have walked up from the area of the dorms, or he could have gotten there when she was somewhere else getting her bag. Or, for that matter, there could be multiple entrances/exits to the dormitory area. Seems like a safety hazard to only have one way to/from the crazy submarine dorms!

SpitefulFox: Only problem with that is that Tom keeps a 30 day (30 comics or just a months worth?) buffer.

Come to think of it, it's a pretty cool twist. A lot of people were predicting Annie rescues Kat / vice versa. Tom had the same thought, because it's a fairly common mechanism in storytelling. So instead of playing it straight, he has Annie have that idea, and attempt-- with hilarious results-- to manufacture such a situation herself.
I'd call that a pretty nifty subversion of a trope! (Sorry Tom, I've heard you don't like TVTropes.)
Goes off to see if the save-friend-to-end-estrangement thing is listed on TVTropes...

Oh I know what went wrong, Antimony forgot to call Kat " Spacemonaught Kat." (Reversal of roles from those days, big-time.) I don't think the "splish" could have been Annie-- there's no indication in the panel that she's wet. (And if her feet were wet, that awesome leap-up-onto-the-railing-then-the-wall might have gone quite badly!) Or, for that matter, there could be multiple entrances/exits to the dormitory area. Seems like a safety hazard to only have one way to/from the crazy submarine dorms! I thought Cascal meant Robot splashing (because of Antimony's plan) but I agree that it doesn't appear necessary (or reasonable) for either Antimony or Robot to be sneaking by or avoiding Kat to set this up. If Robot was down there he and Antimony could've leisurely followed Kat up to set up the ambush in the kiosk area. [edit] Although, if Antimony's really been practicing perhaps she zipped by on the water using etheric super-speed and/or weight-reduction to go get Robot. [/edit]

I still think a 'Destroy All Humans!' or Godzilla rampage routine would have worked better. Maybe not so much destroy all humans, but you get the idea.
OR, if Robot added some roaring in there, it could have worked, but in hindsight, what he did on the previous comic sounds fake from the start, what with the clitche'd robot speech.

I was more leaning towards the joke that Annie read the forum suggestions and came up with the idea, but I'm all aboard with the idea that Tom's clairvoyant.
In other news, I don't think we've seen Annie conjure a forcefield or weird scarlet illusionary flame before.
