It may be inappropriate to say so, but Annie in the last panel puts me in mind of a banshee for some reason. So wild and forlorn. Unreal, ostensibly serene, ready to burst. What a beautiful piece of art.

I get this feeling like the doomsday clock just ticked a minute closer to midnight. What do you think the odds are that Annie will do something really rash, like maybe try pulling the knife-of-mass-destruction out of its sheath?

The main questions that this sequence brought up we can't really speculate about. Obviously it all centers on why Surma chose to have a child, and secondarily why with Anthony; while there are a number of plausible story-appropriate reasons, we just don't have enough information to judge between them.

The unspoken context, what takes Rey here from lashing-out angry to sympathetically sad, and just being grokked by Annie is: "You are a constant living reminder of the loss of our friend/loved one."
It's a hell of a burden for anyone to bear.

What gets me is the panel borders warping. It could just be a representation of Annie's emotional distress... or it could be a sign of reality warping.
Or it could be both. Annie is a potent psychic force, after all, and conventionally, psychic powers are enhanced by strong emotion which, well, enough said.

Well, it seems like some of the previous speculation was right after all. Everyone knew, including Anthony. Does this mean that Surma wanted to go ahead and have a kid despite that fact?
And I think the warping of the art is more symbolic than any actual warping, and it's a damned good effect. Annie is probably worse than utterly crushed right now.

The thing that's getting me here, that may not even have occurred to Annie yet, is that the same thing might well happen to her if she ever has a child.
And I nod to those upthread who have asked, why did Surma have Annie anyway?
Rey looks like he's not happy about having revealed this. And yet, it may well be something she desperately needed to know. Just not, dammit, in this unspeakably hurtful way.
Rey, I bet, is burning with shame and regret already.

Look at Annie's hair streaming out behind her in the last panel. Although it hasn't changed color or texture here, it is an important part of Annie's ethereal self image, and I think a significant indicator of how close to the boundary she is. She's bleeding over into the etheric plane right now, and I wonder if any of her teachers are picking up on the distress she's got to be broadcasting. Where is she going? My bet is Jones. |

In that context, I can't really see anything else she would be referring to. Mind, I suppose that still leaves it up for whether or not she knew it was because of Antimony. I don't see her using the knife. I mean, I can imagine that she's crushed and emotionally unstable, but Annie-gone-slasher is hard to imagine. Annie seems more concerned that the adults covered it up than the fact Surma died because of her. I'd argue that it's not entirely an irrational thing to do, psychologically speaking. It has to be a lot harder to face the fact that she essentially murdered her mother than it is to lash out at the people who knew but never told her. There's also the underlying suggestion, given her insecurities about her father abandoning her, that he blames her for her mother's death. If the adults knew the nature of Annie's birth/Surma's death, then they'd know (in Annie's eyes) why her father had abandoned her but had been keeping it from her this whole time. (It's early here. I really hope that made sense) |

Thinking back now, Annie has always had a component of her that was calm and calculating. Even when she got upset at Rey, it wasn't just wild rage, it was psychological warfare.
Even now, as upset as she is, her dialogue in this scene seems to show that she is still calculating, tracing cause and effect back to the people who had something to do with the pain she is feeling. It's kind of scary. I expect she's off to confront Eglamore or Anja for more information.
This also gives her the leverage to shrug off any blame they might try to place on her for revealing to truth to Rey.

I bet she's going to lash out at Anja, making Kat angry with her (especially if she doesn't know that she's been copying her homework and finds out now). I think it's safe to say she's staying in the Court this summer.

I don't know, I get a more of a "her-world-unraveling"-vibe. The hair looking long could just be an effect of the wierd fisheye-type lens that seems to be effecting the last panel.
