Wow, Tom really nailed it in the last two frames. I didn't realize until I saw them that this is exactly what happens to me when a paradigm-shifting idea hits me.
Very briefly, my eyes open quite wide, time slows down, and the edges of everything become razor sharp. It only lasts a second, but it is breath-taking, and awesome.

I do believe our girl has found her muse. Yes, and I hope the pigeon stays around for a bit! It would be nice if she named it. Any thoughts?

And yes, that last panel is Made Of Win.

We've seen that alchemical symbol before, but I think this is the first time it's been that clearly used in conjunction with Kat. Now, what does it stand for...?

We've seen that alchemical symbol before, but I think this is the first time it's been that clearly used in conjunction with Kat. Now, what does it stand for...? You read my mind; I was just searching to see if we'd figured that out yet. It doesn't seem to be any alchemical symbol that I can determine, and I believe we only see it in relation to Kat. Here are two of the times we've seen it; there may be more: [295] [560]To me, it looks a bit like a stylized satellite dish, drawn in a symbolic style. I figure that if "Technology" were to have an alchemical symbol, it would look something like this. Perhaps it is something Tom created himself?

We've seen that alchemical symbol before, but I think this is the first time it's been that clearly used in conjunction with Kat. Now, what does it stand for...? It was more or less always associated with Kat - particularly in Treatise Two. I was bugged to hell and back about what it stood for, so I finally asked Tom on formspring, and he answered that he is the one who made it. So at least I could stop trawling the Internet search engines for lists of alchemical symbols ;-) The question of what it stands for remains open, though. For one, I don't think it's supposed to be "alchemical" - I think it's more likely to convey images of circuit schematics, electrical current, and such. And from now on, incandescent filaments ;-) EDIT: nijaed ;-) I like the satellite dish idea, too.

and I believe we only see it in relation to Kat. Where exactly have we seen it before, anyway? I could only find it on two of the treatise pages (and yes, it indeed has been clearly associated with Kat before). Possibly. I couldn't find it either anywhere outside the comic. If I wanted to be mean, I'd say it looks a bit like a toilet seat! ;D edit: Ah, thanks foresterr, that clears it up. In any case, does anyone else think the penultimate panel would make an excellent wallpaper? Or even T-shirt design?

I think foresterr hit the nail on the head. It reminded me of a circuit diagram also. I think Kat represents in some ways the innocent side of the courts technology.

OH MY GOD TOM TOOK OUR SUGGESTION AND IS MAKING A FLYING ROBOT *sick ass air guitar solo* Well, he's originally an "S" model, which stands for Seraph, after all. And any proper angel needs a pair of wings.

The only places I can find it are in the two treatises here: [295] [560]Oh, very yes! Especially if the bones and schematic lines were in a brilliant white, so they'd glow under a blacklight.

So at least I could stop trawling the Internet search engines for lists of alchemical symbols ;-) Thanks for telling us this, because like other people here it gives me the electrical diagram feeling, and I was about to go hunting to see if it was some obscure chart symbol. Now I know it's original. What's funny is I wouldn't even think of it as electrical without the little bulb at the end of that top line to make me think "connection point." I would totally buy a t-shirt with the second panel. Either glow in the dark or in a brown/sepia tone reminiscent of vitruvian man.

<delurk> The symbol is a sigil. You have a grid or circle with letters on it and the points where the line lands represent letters in the word encoded in the sigil. The trouble is, if you don't have the original grid/circle, then you can't decode it. You can see en example here : www.magick-instinct.org/Chaos/sigils.htmThe question is, has Tom ever shown such a grid or circle of letters in the comic? </delurk>

I just realized something;
Kat's not turning the bird into a cyborg; she's using it's bone structure and is going to apply it to Robot to make him less bulky!

Yes, the symbol is also in the 3rd treatise.
But I don't have any reason to believe Kat is experiencing any special power that she hasn't experienced several times before. She's the same girl that created an antigravity machine out of a thermos and a flying vehicle within a few hours.
It's just that this time we saw as inspiration struck her.

Heh...how much do you want to bet that her anti-gravity engine, unbeknownst to her, actually employs etheric science, and that is the reason that the court dismantled it after her rescue?

Very briefly, my eyes open quite wide, time slows down, and the edges of everything become razor sharp. It only lasts a second, but it is breath-taking, and awesome. Yeah. It's sad when so many things become clear for but a fleeting moment. It worse when it continues 45.3 seconds too long, though. But I don't have any reason to believe Kat is experiencing any special power that she hasn't experienced several times before. She's the same girl that created an antigravity machine out of a thermos and a flying vehicle within a few hours. It's just that this time we saw as inspiration struck her. Yes. Triple Hurrah! for Mad Science! ;D

Even Kat admitted to an ability of sorts - I wish I could remember the exact page...ah found it: www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=507It's a sense of knowing what one can do with the resources present. It's almost savant-like in the sense that she's able to see what can be done with what she has available, and then where to take it (in the sense of robotics, impossible machines, etc). Definitely not a "normal" ability per se, and would explain why she's being trained at the Court. We've got people like this now, who can do the same thing with mechanical stuff - they see what's there, what could be done with it, how it can be tweaked to do what it is they want it to do. I don't think it would have an etheric component per se, although I think it could work with the etherium if need be. If there is one to Kat's ability it's the "seeing," an almost oracle-like ability to visibly what could be done with the materials at hand. It might explain how she figured out Sky Watcher's abilities so quickly - she sees what he has on him, and can extrapolate what those things do. I think at this point, an ability like that can go from simple reasoning on how to make a robotic limb work to more impossible stuff as long as the knowledge base behind it fills out the "What does she see?" aspect. In other words, teach Kat all the advanced robotics, she's going to do crazy stuff with it. Teach her computer stuff, she's going to do crazy stuff with it. Teach her how Diego's etherium-to-robotics stuff works, she'll probably figure that out and go the extra mile with it. I think, at this point, her ability works as long as there's enough information in her mind on the nuts and bolts of *how* to get from point A (what she sees) to point B (how it all comes together). She's also good at working things out herself as far as figuring out how to make X do Y. Whether or not that's connected to her special ability's pretty much up for speculation. However, it adds to her knowledge base. If she say, figures out that Anja's computer works on a level she can appreciate, she's going to figure out how to make other stuff jive with the etherium as well.

I just realized something; Kat's not turning the bird into a cyborg; she's using it's bone structure and is going to apply it to Robot to make him less bulky! That's what I figured from the start. The bone structure of the bird has inspired her robot design. I'm guessing Robot's new rig will have a distinctively avian feel to it.

Guys, he's right. It looks like a sigil. Which, in Kat's case, makes sense. Her affinity leans towards technology, so a symbol that represents her would be more likely to be a created thing than something that is more primal. Also, her ability for creation? I called that a long time ago when I suggested she was like the Marvel Comic character Forge. Then again, her ability may just be above-average intellect when it comes to technology. Not every ability is so blatantly extra-normal.

He *may* be right, but I'd bet money that he's wrong.
EDITED TO ADD: I rather dislike assumption atop of assumptions stated as facts. There's nothing to show or indicate that this is a "sigil". It may be, but that it sorta kinda reminds you two of "sigils" doesn't make it by necessity one. It reminds me of a piece of circuit instead.
So you *might* be right. Just *might*.
