Indeed. It was at two minutes past the hour this time -- how bizarre.
I like the commentary today -- it's kind of ambiguous. A girl with parts of a robot lying around -- Kat, or perhaps there is a girl being constructed with robot parts -- a random robot or perhaps THE Robot.

I think Kat feels intimidated by the elegant simplicity of Diego's machines. She strives to be as good or better.

I think Kat feels intimidated by the elegant simplicity of Diego's machines. She strives to be as good or better. That's the same thing that came to my mind when I read that. She's obviously comparing her work to someone else's here, and my first guess would be Diego's machines.

A girl with parts of a robot lying around -- Kat, or perhaps there is a girl being constructed with robot parts -- a random robot or perhaps THE Robot. It could also refer to cyborgs and cyberization (as in, some girl who is now rocking on with some brand-new components (albeit artificial ones)).

I could just be reading too much into this (Gunnerkrigg fans reading too much into something? Madness!) but I have a feeling Kat is probably echoing Tom's frustrations with his art here. I guess it's a feeling common to anyone who creates stuff for fun.

THAT HAIR I like the commentary today -- it's kind of ambiguous. It made me think of Dresden Codak. This may have been an undesired side effect.

Kat sounds like she's about 10 seconds away from full-on mad scientist rage.

Or, if it goes the other way, that guy on Sesame Street who's frustrated with his piano playing. Chin up, little puppet dude.

I feel Kat's frustration. Even though she's asking Robot how it is, it doesn't matter in the long run if she's not happy with it. Urg.
Those other robots look intimidated in the last panel. LAUGHING ON LINE.
*Edit: Ahahahaha, Tom, " LAUGHING ON LINE " did not notice that before. I haven't been on the forums in a while, but it wasn't always like that, was it?

It made me think of Dresden Codak. This may have been an undesired side effect. I just came from Dresden Codak (just updated to point out 'girl with robot parts') right before reading GC. Needless to say, I kinda want to see a robo-Kat now ^.^

Ah, the mind of the artist...
I've read from several artists that the real artist never finishes a work, but only abandons it in frustration at not getting it *right*.

There are those rare few occasions when everything clicks together like magic, and you set the pencil/mouse/tablet/guitar/wrench down and sigh contentedly and can't wait to see what people say about it. These happen too rarely to count on fingers of one hand. The rest of the time a perfectionist has to settle for "blast it, this sucks".
Poor Kat. You know you can't get those sleek designs if you're not using etheric means to power your robots. Otherwise, clunky.

It must be strange for Robot, who has been in both electronic and etheric robot bodies. Perhaps he will be able to give some suggestions to Kat, or at least some insights. On the subject, do we know how old Robot actually is? Perhaps we will find out more about his personal history in this chapter, like why he was disassembled and in the parts closet. I know his other arm can be seen on Bonus Page 2: Sleeping Arrangements, but I don't know the significance of that (if any.)

I think her frustration goes deeper.
She wants to be as good as Diego, but right now she's got to be wondering if being as good as him means being as nasty as him. It's a little like using whatever scientific discoveries the Nazis made in the torturing of people, and having to decide if the knowledge gained by such means is really worth using, or if the price was too high.
She's not sorted out the price, methinks. And Diego's work is so amazingly graceful and elegant, it's blown her away already. I think what we're looking at is more than just her intellectually sorting how to build a robot, but having to emotionally sort through what she feels about the quality of Diego's work, and of Diego himself.

why did the word "Frankenstein" Just pop up in my mind?
Methink's Kat's gonna be the new Jack by the end of this chapter: Creepy, Controlling, super-powered, and possibly possessed.

I think that even Diego's robots were scientific rather than etheric in design. The Anti-gravity machine is a pretty clear example that science in GKC goes further than it does in the real world, without adding magic into the mix.

She wants to be as good as Diego, but right now she's got to be wondering if being as good as him means being as nasty as him. "Confound it all! I will never be able to make such an elegant robot...unless I first make some kind of weird arrow and have William shoot my unrequited love with it!" This is the thought bubble that didn't make it into the comic for layout reasons.
